You could do that after two weeks or so (still not appreciated) but not after 1-3 hours!

[For the uninformed: Since today [Dec, 24th 2015], if you hang out in a Group chat for a while (~ 3 hours) a kind of a 'Scroll back cap' appears cutting away older text]

Better focus your programming forces on:

An auto-save option, allowing to adjust how often the saves happen and how big the save-files can be before starting a new one.

The opportunity to claim chat-logs of the past, lets say out of a period of the last 3-5 years of Private and Group chats! [Yes YEARS] Like you can do it in online-banking with your account statement.

Free adjustability of font sizes!! REALLY STEAM! It sucks you cannot do it easily without a stupid workaround!

Many have been asking for them to save the chats locally with a text file, like pretty much all other IM programs do. It would be simple enough. With a text file, its easy enough to save years or decades worth of chats.

They don't steal your logs, they just don't have them anymore so there is no possibility for us getting back any chats from years ago.

The Steam mobile app has a chat log of 1 month, why can't we have it here?

I'm surprised this thread is still so small, I guess a lot of people haven't noticed this terrible change yet, or are like me and haven't restarted their steam yet and so aren't running the latest update.

It was bad enough that the client didn't already have a log option, now automatically truncating the scrollback? It's not only going the wrong direction, it's adding insult to injury.

Or they just don't care about the change as I'm sure most people who have steam have rebooted at least once since Dec 27th which was the last post.

Also most people don't look in the suggestions/ideas area unless they have a suggestion or idea to make and most of those are from people making suggestions and ideas for games which should be posted in the games discussion area.

Stuff like this is gonna encourage people using third party clients, which will probably be less secure/more risky

This has been a thing for EIGHT (8) years. Won't be fixed (unless you'd like to pay for 400TB of storage for Valve!)

And why would they need to store it on valves servers? People are suggesting to have it all stored locally on peoples computers in text files. Its that simple. No need to store them on steam servers. Its easy enough to setup, ICQ has been doing it for a long long time. Even before steam was around, heck IRC has been doing it even longer.

Its not like it wold take much room, maybe 100 megs for someone who chats a lot over a 5 to 10 year period so basically not even noticeable on hard drives today, let along the size of drives we'll have 5 or 10 years from now.
