playing games offline
I want to play civ offline . I see no benefit of any kind from being connected to steam in any way while I am playing the game . Steam should provide this as an option for those of us who do not want to play other people . If you have ever played against your children in risk or monopoly you will know why we do not like multi player games . Steam causes the game to crash with monotonous regularity and does not seem to be interested in fixing that problem . The only solution is to remove steam from the loop completely and let the game run itself .

Steam can't fix games crashing, because that's the job of the game devs. Contact the game devs.

You can play games offline by setting Steam in offline mode if the games support that. Some games are completely DRM-free. Game devs choose whether they make their games DRM-free or not. So ask the game devs to provide a DRM-free version that doesn't phone home to Steam.

steam causes the game to crash . I have no idea why steam want to waste their resources on remaining connected to me when I only play single player games ? The game has its problems but it is steam which crashes it and it is steam which causes the absurd reload times . The simple and obvious solution is for steam to allow me to play offline .

You can play most single player games in offline mode. But you still need to run Steam. If you don't want to run Steam, stop buying games on Steam.

That being said, while I don't play Civ6 it's extremely suspect to claim that Steam causes Civ6 to crash, which it works fine with tens of thousands of other games. I'd argue that's an issue with Civ6. I'd be more inclined to believe it's an issue with your system and blaming Steam is just a convenience.

I'm not sure why you keep talking about playing offline, because you seem to be saying that Steam running is the problem.

Now, Steam does have an Offline Mode, where Steam is running but not connected to the internet. You could try that. But it seems that the problem is Steam itself running at all, based on what you've been saying.

So, have you tried running the game without Steam running? (Make sure you disable Steam's start-on-system-startup feature if you're trying this.)

the game never crashes or freezes in general play . It only freezes ( and crashes windows ) when it is trying to take the turn of the Ai via steam . My point is that there is no reason of any kind for me to be connected to steam while I am playing this game . What I want from steam is the option of being independent of them . That option should be obvious and easy to use . I am a customer not a computer technician so thanks for all the helpful suggestions but no I do not intend to disable anything that is steams job and it is what I paid for .

What do you mean "general play"? How is the AI taking its turn via Steam?

You shouldn't have bought the game via Steam if you didn't want to have to run it with Steam. The reason is because that is what you agreed to when you bought the game on Steam. It has nothing to do with multiplayer. And how is it Steam's job to work your computer for you? A lot of programs run on start up by default, and disabling them isn't hard in the slightest (you can do it from task manager on windows10). You aren't paying anything to use Steam. You pay for games, yes, but the service itself is free, so no, you haven't paid for Steam to work Windows for you.

How do you even know it'll run fine without Steam in the first place? Have you run the game without Steam? If so then just do that. Does Steam crash regularly for you with other games or just this one? How do you know it's not just your system that is causing the problem?

I don't know what you mean by "trying to take the turn of the AI via Steam". If it's an AI playing, then I'd expect the AI instructions to come from your local machine's installation of the game...unless for some reason the game connects to a server whose AI it runs. And I haven't played any of the Civ games on Steam so I don't know if it does that, but I doubt it'd do that because that would seem like a bunch of unnecessary work on the part of the developer/publisher (to maintain such a server for the purpose of being an AI).

Anyhow, as for being able to run things without Steam -- it's possible, for some games. You may or may not need to tweak or your games to run them without Steam. The most likely reason for this is that the Steam platform is, at least sometimes, meant as a form of DRM -- basically, to force people to have to authenticate themselves using their Steam account in order to be allowed access to their games. This is meant to prevent/discourage digital piracy, but the downside is that it does limit what legitimate, paying customers can do with their games. If you'd prefer to have games that don't force you to use a DRM thing like Steam, it's probably useful to look into buying games from DRM-free sources, or at least checking whether a game has DRM or not.

yes I have run the game while steam was offline for some reason and it ran like clockwork .It is not the game crashing . the game works fine , I dont want to guess quite how steam is getting it wrong but they are and the simplest solution to the problem is to provide an offline option .

Well, presumably it's a value-add for publishers to sell their games on here at all, being able to phone home and thereby ensuring that your copy of the game is not stolen. However, yeah, the tradeoff with that is that the user can in some cases experience instability. Sucks when that happens, I feel ya.
