what for ?
is anybody else kind of wondering what kind of *low key?* monopoly is essentially- steam ?? why must i use this launcher if not to purchase games and verify install ? if anybody can shed light, please. i run a low cpu system and prefer not to have extra crap running while gaming. the truth is, i dont care what steam pays or makes off of anything. i just dont see the point of a forced app launcher. i wish not to pirate second hand repacks and such, but only to run a clean exe with no strings or launchers attached. a tall order i suppose. Thoughts ??

Game devs are allowed to provide you with DRM free copies of games they make. It's not mandatory to require Steam for the game to be played.

Most just don't though.

There are other game distributors, and other launchers, you're not being forced to use Steam. If a game you want is only available on Steam, take it up with the developers, no one is forcing them to sell on Steam exclusively.

But ultimately the developers make decisions about their products, and if you don't like their decisions, don't buy their products.

Good news: If you are not just looking for an excuse not to pay for your games, there are several stores that sell DRM free games (aside from Steam as shown above)
https://www.humblebundle.com/store/c/windows?sort=bestselling&platform=windows&page=1&drm=download
https://www.gog.com/
are just two of them.
(Mind you, Humble sells games with DRM, also, so check before you buy).
