Games requiring third party accounts: A big no-no

As a Steam user, I want to buy a game and play it right away. The last thing I want to do is having to give out my email and other personal information to a third party, create an account on some third party service, and having to keep track of the separate credentials.
Steam/Gabe/whoever, please, if you are listening, can you make it so that games can't require you to create a third party account?

the sony PRODUCT PAGE for pc, said "OPTIONAL" and was later changed after sony was made aware by people showing it said "optional".

even the devs know this was the case, stop making stuff up.

yet it wasnt a requirement from the start because of "issues", then later tried forcing it as a "requirement".

its amazing the nonsense people make up, in order to deflect facts, to keep arguments going on bs.

If you bought the game through a third party store and you feel that you were misled about your purchase, you need to ask the third party store for a refund. If you bought the game through Steam, then the information on the Steam website is what applies unless it explicitly links to another website and tells you to look there.

The archive for steam and the os store showed osn required and ps plus required for 9nline play for the respective sites.

On the actual product page for helldivers 2. Not the unrelated ps page bad-faith-ragebait-youtubers keep inaccurately quoting. That page is clearly not the helldivers 2 page.

I linked to the archives for both stores helldivers 2 pages in a previous thread.
Again. Just like products on the steam store, the games requirements may be different than the services. And such was listed, since day 1, on both store pages for helldivers 2. On the helldivers 2 pages, not the unrelated page. Please stop trying to spread misinformation.

If someone bought it from directly from the PlayStation store, they would be sent a key.

There would be no reason to visit the store page on Steam since you can just activate the key directly in your library. Since the PlayStation page originally said a PSN account is optional for PlayStation titles on PC, there is even less of a reason to check Steam's store page after purchase.

That's where one of the issues was and why Sony was quick to change it when people pointed it out.

Steam is the third party for ALL games not made by Valve, just like Walmart is if you buy your games there. The store is never the 1st party.

Steam is not a wholesaler and the steam subscriber agreement clearly lays out your transaction is between you and the developer/publisher.

Basically, the difference between selling through steam and selling on their own website. It proves that steam is a third party (By the description alone) and not first. I need to add however that steam does refer to other websites as third-party, too.

The discussion was never about what the store page said.

It was about the actions of the developer, the lack of sufficient communication, the discrepancy between the PlayStation page and the Steam page, and the selling of the game in regions where PSN isn't available.

All of those(especially the selling in blocked regions) did everything but directly state the PSN linking was optional.

The blurb on the store page doesn't erase everything else.

No, but two different websites can both BE the third party. Any steam keys sold on a different site "can" also be third party sales. Only time they aren't is when they are sold by the 1st party directly, such as buying a steam key directly from Sony.

Steam is a distribution method, that does not inherently make it the 1st party for sales since they hold no rights to what is being sold and is only issuing the license under the agreement with the 1st party.

Interesting aside, one of the few online game stores that do at least "sometimes" act as a first party sale is humble bundle as they will outright buy a number of keys from developers and act as a wholesaler, rather than work on a per sale basis. This is mostly for the bundles, their "regular" store operates as a 3rd party seller.
