Before Discord, there have been a lot of other 3rd party chat & voice software that people used, and Steam obviously has existed as long as those and yet is still around. Programs like TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, Mumble, etc. never put Steam out of business.
By the way, Discord actually tried, and failed - to get into the storefront/DRM market. There was a short period of time when Discord was selling games just like Steam is. That was pretty short lived and they eventually retired that feature.
Two different types of software ultimately that serve different purposes, even if they have some overlap in certain features. Both can exist.
Steam had voice chat long before many other voice chat programs even existed. It even out lasted some other voice chat programs. If you don't want to hear others using it, then turn off voice chat in the game or in steam.
If you don't want to use Steams Voice chat... then don't. If you do then use it. I personally can't stand discord.
There are games that I enjoy voice chat with just the people on the server, meaning I don't have to use a 3rd party program to talk with them and then figure out all the settings for that voice server and what not. I can talk with 1 side or both if its setup that way.
So just use what ever voice chat you want to use, and leave the rest of us to use what ever voice chat we want to use. If Valve doesn't see a point to keeping voice chat in Steam and game developers don't see a point in keeping voice chat in their games they will remove it.
But at least right now we have options thats better then no options.
Edit....
And just when I thought I couldn't dislike discord anymore... its now coming with ads!

So yet another good reason to have more selection for voice chat.
The crowd is seen as the population online and in different chat programs and on the many different servers seen as the programs you listed in the replies to the post.
There is no point to be an individual and there is no point to follow the crowd all the time when people seem to get lost and become afraid of other people.
For example, if you look into the crowd(s) in a certain city full of people, you will see that they all seem to be the same people doing the same thing.
It may work for some people but it doesn't work for everyone.
You may not notice it but we are not all the same.
Since I am a guy, I don't know if you have ever seen a girl. (Did you see the difference?)
Since I am a person, you may think you are a person. (Did you see the same?)
Since I am seen as a gifted student, it leaves me to wonder what kind of student you were/are in real life.
Some of you seem to have grown up in the online world and it is a world full of predators and random people.
If you cannot see the samples and examples that are there, it is likely there inside your head that you are 'superior' to other people.
It is likely there that you think you are smarter than smarter people.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've seen a lot of inactivity on steam and there seems to be a lot of randomness in community discussions with posts that don't seem to make any sense.
I've also seen complaints about chatrooms not working and people complaining that things are not working out in the steam community.
Since you brought up digital rights management (DRM), I'm sure you have seen people bring up pirate software and cheats and hacks and 'selling gold online' in video games.
There are lots of cheaters in the video game world and it is seen that 'cheating is a normal thing' because many people seem to cheat in real life.
In the community discussions, there seems to be complaints on 'the porn business' and 'perverts' and it is a danger to the girls online.
Also, since steam is an online digital platform for video games, there are thousands of video games that connect people together, to play together and to play with each other and it is silly to comment that 'it is not the point to find friends online' while using steam or while playing steam video games.
There are community discussions and people can add friends and become friends with people they want to be friends with: friends list.
If you don't like it, maybe you should tell them to take that away as well because you pointed out that there are other chat programs. (silly; sarcastic)
Since there have been other chat programs, as you've said, and it doesn't seem to hurt business, it brings up a point that 'not everything is about business' and there are people that actually like to be clean and live clean. (seen as hygiene; showers; brushing teeth; brushing hair; washing hands)
Also, I've seen video game developers answer requests from the community such as fans and the video game actually becomes 'dumber' and 'edited' and 'not entirely fun' anymore.

If you'd like me to teach you a few more things, there are such things as complicated things.

It is simple | It isn't simple
