We desperately need an alternative way to share videos in 2024!
After many years of people asking to link videos to the Steam Community that are not from YouTube, and it STILL hasn't changed, I'm gonna bring this up again.

I've run across posts from as far back as 2014, asking for such a feature. It is 2024, and Valve still hasn't changed anything in regards to alternatives to YouTube. Some things suggested:

  • Upload videos directly to Steam. I understand if Valve doesn't want to do this, but it was one of the requests.
  • Link streams from other accounts, like Twitch.
  • Link videos from other services, like Vimeo.

With YouTube enforcing intrusive ads and other shady monetization techniques, there are some people who refuse to use YouTube, or would just simply share videos from elsewhere. There are other popular video-sharing sites which don't get enough attention, and it seems unfair for Steam to only have one way to share vids, even if YouTube is still the most popular platform in the world.

Of course, any videos uploaded should abide to the Steam Community Guidelines. 'Nuff said.

UPDATE: As of June 27th, Valve is beta testing a video-recording function[www.gsmarena.com], at least on Steam Deck. This could open up the possibility of sharing videos in the Steam Community, as sharing via YouTube is the only option for now. According to a post on X[x.com] shared in the comments below, Valve was testing sharing recordings as screenshots, and this update is likely based off of that work.

It's quite possible we'll see an alternative way of sharing game play videos very soon in the stable branch, however at this time it's unclear if you'll be able to share anything more than that besides using YouTube links. This thread will be updated as the situation progresses.

There are sites to allow you to share videos:

YouTube, Twitch etc. Why does Steam have to be everything?

As for: We desperately need an alternative way to share videos in 2024!

We?

This is a gaming store. At the end of the day, it doesn't need to be anything more than that.

We certainly don't need Valve spending the time or money to become a video hosting platform. There are already more than enough sites built for that specific purpose. Whether you like YouTube or not is irrelevant.

And the length of time these things have been requested is completely irrelevant as well. So what if it's 2024? Next year it will be 2025. A bad idea is still a bad idea no matter what year it is or how many people keep asking for it.

Honestly I have never used nor cared for Youtube for videos The last company that I want to have involved with my data is Google and from anyone that I do know that uses it they all agree it is written like it is separate things desperately stacked on top of each other instead of a coherent design.

I personally only ever record troubleshoots and for that ScreenPal is my go to business application as it allows disabling all social media types does not auto index results in search engines and allows to re-edit screen captures when needed. Never any ads because it is not meant to be a social platform.

So if any needs to show a problem they have in a game or a simple solution that is a very quick method to share things. The restriction being advanced editing tools are paid subscription and limited to 15 minutes of record time when not on subscription.

It is however not suited for entertainment purposes for that Twitch is your mainstream alternative though the latter has absolutely abysmal search options.

Previously you had Ustream which was the predecessor and direct competitor to Twitch. However they got bought by IBM and unless you have serious money to spend its not worth it. That said if you do have it that is like going from paint to Photoshop in functionality.

Looking at affordable and established still existing platforms I would say Twitch or DailyMotion is your best bet. Out of those Twitch can be legally hacked to bits to add functionality on top if you have coding experience or hire someone.
For examples look up BarryCarlyon at https://github.com/BarryCarlyon

Now Steam building there own service would end up in a disaster or they need to spend a lot of resources on it. Ever seen there video player for movies here? Yeah not what you want honestly.

One piece of good news for you is that they are working on the ability to make video recordings of games using Steam which can then be uploaded to Steam to share.

Not clear yet when that’ll be released, but within the next few months doesn’t seem unlikely. Also not clear if it’ll be possible to upload videos to Steam which aren’t captured by Steam itself.

Considering the issues with the YouTube integration as mentioned here it would definitely be a good idea to add some more options besides just YouTube to upload videos, things like Twitch, Vimeo, even PeerTube would be good alternatives.

Some people suggested they could let people host on Steam but that's not a great idea because Video is very storage intensive, better to offload that to another platform.

Good idea. There is also no video recording option in the game, a third-party program must be used for this...

i would not say desperately

it would be nice to have something like twitch streams here instead of going to other sites

especially with youtube making life hard for adblockers

with all the talk of ms buying steam and all

why not valve/steam buying twitch?

integrate it into the client and let us join in if we want to

that we being the impersonal one (:spaz2excited:)

Valve can't afford Twitch.

I still find it wild that even with the current issues that Steam has with YouTube, people are willing to defend inadequacy

I think anyone still defending it at this point is living under a rock because it isn't simply inadequate, it doesn't work altogether, totally broken. So at the moment we don't have an inadequate video upload system, we have no video uploading capability at all on Steam. Yet we still have the section and buttons to do it, they just don't work at all.

You know how long it took Valve to remove the Facebook linking button after the service was discontinued?

And Valve is going to add a feature to clip and upload directly on Steam in the future.

Linking videos to your steam account through Steam itself has been broken since 2020, and doing so with a web browser has been broken for a few months.
