Feature Suggestion : "Data saving option" to stop animations of Videos / GIFs / WEBMs
Feature Tip: Data saving option to stop animations of Videos / GIFs / WEBMs.

On many steam pages, there are videos that you can't stop.
Such videos/animations (rectangular or square banner) are made with GIF or WEBM technology.
Such technologies consume a lot of bandwidth and weigh down the store pages by increasing the client's data consumption.
Also, when the page has many of these animations, it tends to slow down the client's performance: as it happens in the points shop in the sections rich in animations

I propose an option of the "Data saving" that allows you to stop:
- Videos
- Banners in GIFs
- Banners in WEBM.

* In this way, the consultation of the steam store would be smoother and faster.
* In addition, Steam's bandwidth and data consumption would have a great decrease!
* Plus also safe for those who are photosensitive or epileptic.

Thanks you

right now you can get rid of this stuff in different ways, with a browsers it's quite easy if you have ublock, on steam client you need to edit webkit css file found on resource folder and add quite few lines cause home page bloat it's really getting out of hand, on my client I basically blocked all the elements and left only the search bar active, on browser it's a matter of deactivate the blocks with two clicks and reactivate them later

Also agreed, plus also safe for those who are photosensitive or epileptic. Browsing through Steam should not be a health risk, options like this would prevent dangerous situations.

That definitely should be added to the suggestion!

Well, sadly, it happened. An Epileptic friend of mine got a game update, went to check it out, app crashed and re-opened to the homepage where the flashy sale animation was happening and triggered a seizure. Thankfully not a severe one, but this is the risk we're heavily concerned about!

For stuff I work on, I have a Data Saving mode, for exact reasons like this for users.
Seems like a fairly humble request, not a bad idea at all.

I would recommend making a report of something like that via the store page or contacting support if a graphic does that to someone or may do so, they may actually get involved in something serious like that.

The friend in question HAS reached out to steam and she was completely ignored. As I'm sure many others with the same issue and friends of those who have the issue have done too. So sadly no, so far they have not gotten involved or taken note of the seriousness... I pray they do soon.

It's frustrating that there are still so many who do not take epilepsy seriously. When a health concern is brought up, it should not be ignored like this.
