Gifs for profile pictures
It would be great if steam adds gif as profile picture but animated because you can use gifs as profile picture but they arent animated.

So then we can’t possibly have any features that might result in exploitation, correct? No screenshots, artworks, achievements, etc? Honestly, overall that’s a very lame excuse to not include genuine features. :lunar2019deadpanpig:
The first two get a pass because, when necessary, they can also be placed behind age gates as per the age restrictions of the game community hubs themselves. At least in theory. Good luck convincing Wallpaper Engine of this, for example...
The third you already have an ongoing thread about, I believe.

Yes, a few missdo-ers ruin the platform for the bunch. This is the case for so many things in life. If these people weren't to be then a suggestion like this might get a pass without any doubt. I for one think it would be cool if everybody utilized gif-avatars respectfully.
And profile pictures can’t have the same age gate treatment because? :nonplussed_creep:

So you want to remove existing screenshot and artwork gifs? :hmmmx:

I never said I wanted to add or remove anything. I was simply pointing out a small flaw with allowing users to add animated gifs as profile images.

I understand what you are saying and people add gifs to their profiles . Just for a second imagine if Valve went ahead with this then it was abused in ways that we wouldn't have thought of. This would cause a huge headache for Valve adding a feature that would allow for malicious intent.

The problem mainly seems to be with types of browser used. So viewing Steam via a web browser could put a user at risk.

This may have been addressed with some browsers and I am certain that antivirus/anti malware programs are on top of this also.

So while the risk is possibly quite small, there is a risk so why chance it.

Whether or not you want to admit it, you've just argued in favor of never adding anything under the stance of "well there may possibly be a risk with it we don't know, so we shouldn't add it." If there's some magic issue that exists no one knows about, we can deal with it when it becomes known, not just hide from any new additions forever. :lunar2019deadpanpig:

:fresh_meat_for_arena::bfburger::catgirl_watermelon::btc::MH_Treasure::shoob: Strongly agree with this suggestion. Would love to have an animated version of my profile picture.

You need to look at this from a business point of view and not a wanting consumer..

This is not "there may be a risk we don't know" but actually "there is a known risk". Valve have to protect themselves as well as the customer base..

imagine the scenario :

Gabe: We need something to give the players.

Valve employee: How about animated gifs?

Gabe: Ok can it be used to abuse an already in place system?

Valve employee: Well there is a potential risk that it could be exploited.

Gabe: Ahh thats fine give it to them anyway and we will worry about it later after they have had their computers compromised with malware..

This would cause uproar in the community if Valve implemented something that could put users at risk...

So as a business who has to cater for millions of customers why would they add something that could risk them being sued or lose customers?

Well imo the gif avatars would be really very abusable. The current stage is very good. I personally love the steam points feature for animated avatar and it shoould stay that way

I think it’s just supposed to be a universal, "hello let me introduce myself" type of information, just like your username is. It’s public information regardless of your privacy settings just like it can be fetched though sites like steamdb. Maybe you are proposing that people themselves mark whether their avatar is 18+ or not but then we are just back to square one about trusting humans to set the right thing.

Coupled with the username, it is just too centralized information that likely has no excuse to be suggestive, as far as Valve is concerned. Community *Content* is evidently a different story, hence the blurring filter and whatnot. Again, some emphasis on this system actually working properly which isn't always the case. It's just about what "Little Tim" can and cannot see from right out of the box.

They wont do it. Steam just added to points shop animated avatars. Adding this feature no one would get those animated anime girls avatars. Also users would abuse this feature putting whatever in their avatars and everything would be so messy. Go to Discord.

Even in your example, it’s a risk Valve already takes by having artwork and screenshot showcases. You can easily add a gif to those, so I’m unsure why it’s now magically a new issue.

Practically any system is exploitable, to say otherwise is foolish. :emofdr:

I mean you can totally play games with someone and never see their profile picture, and not have any new issues because of this, so I’m unsure it’s actually universal. Considering the content can be on a profile, there’s no real argument why it cannot be on a picture. The only thing needed for most games to be able to differentiate a playeris a name. :hmmmx:

That is true. Sometimes games legislate their own set of avatars completely separate from the ones that are as per the Steam API, which leaves the username to be more relevant. I think the major concern is more in line with this platform and how all of us enact a sort of Steam Community, whether you choose to elect really strict privacy settings or not. It is made a sort of responsibility for all of us to keep *at least the username and avatar* strictly safe since it is made visible for any lesser age that is browsing. It wouldn't be much of a community if some avatars were crossed off for any aforementioned reason, in my mere opinion.
