Background music in big picture mode
I almost exclusively use big picture mode when using steam and I love the console style interface, but its a little depressing navigating the menus with just silence and the sounds of the UI. Some background ambient music for the steam menus like on PS5 would be really nice and would really help complete the console experience and make it feel less like a desktop, ideally with the option to choose our own music too

You can already do this with your own music player which can also be controlled via keyboard commands. No need for Valve to add in something like that.

Obviously, but that requires you to manually pause and play, and have that file pre loaded. it'd be nice to just have it automatically work depending on if you're in the steam menu or not, having to grab your keyboard and manually do it is just impractical and inconvenient. the whole point of big picture mode is to emulate the console experience, i use it from my couch on my tv with a controller.

Any decent music player can and does play the music in the background. You can already have it up and running before launching steam or launching big picture mode. Best of all you wouldn't be limited to just 1 song. Get tried of the that song playing, change it with the press of a button or hit pause, heck turn the volume up or down... while in big picture mode.

Many keyboards come with multi-media keys now so have dedicated buttons.

I don't know if it still exists or not but there is a music player in steam that you might be able to use the controller with in BPM. Not sure if that was a thing or not, as I've used BPM a max of like 3 or 4 times for just enough time to try to find the exit button to it.

Either way, you can already have stuff playing and go start your game. I don't see the point though, just how long are you spending in the menu, doesn't take me long to decide on a game and go play it. I have music playing in the background already via winamp on the same PC and leave it go once in the game (I turn off in game music from every game)

Sorry JD01 for the dummy response here... I understand and before there was a music in background so cool, very calme, stressless, and it give a ambiance... And maybe when valve release the Steamdeck they stop rhis music. I really want to have it back. And don't want to launch my music for few seconds before launching a game...

It's not because you don't need something that other people don't need it lol

For anyone still looking to do this, you can use Wallpaper Engine and set a random wallpaper with no sound or music. Then, in the settings of Wallpaper Engine, set an application rule that makes it so that it switches to a wallpaper with music when steamwebhelper.exe is focused on/is the active window. That is what I do to have a background music for my “console tv PC” since I use Steam Big Picture with Steam ROM Manager to launch all my games.

that would be nice for the steamdeck as well, especially since the old steam big picture had this feature already.would be nice to see the return of the old menu music as well.

Okay so just stumbled on this post with the exact same question and after a quick search on Decky Marketplace found a plugin called "Audio Loader" that allows you to do just that. On top of that it has its own gallery where you can install soundpacks for menu sounds. I just installed MGS 5 Droid soundpack! Now my steamdeck sounds like iDroid. lol

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
