Windows 7 is dead, so are the games that don't work on Windows 10/11
Steam no longer runs on Windows 7 computers. Not big surprise. Problem though is the fact that a large chunk of the games I have on Steam do not like running on Windows 10/11 and only work on Windows 7. Valve should make a Legacy version of Steam for older games. Heck, even some of the really old games that aren't compatible with DOSBox or similar software emulation will not run on Windows 10/11, even when using VirtualShell.

Really? Which games specifically will not run? I have over a thousand games in my various libraries, including a big chunk on physical disc's. I have been able to get every single game up and running on my Windows 10 machine. And I also have not had a single issue with DOSbox, either.

This argument again... So which games don't work on Win10/11?

What disc based games can you get to run on Windows 10? I cannot run any of my disc ones due to missing files that Windows 10 no longer has but Windows 7 does. Such as the three Sim Theme Park games, I have discs but they will not run on Windows 10 but they will on Windows 7. All of the Tonka PC games will not run on Windows 10. All of the old Lego PC games (Racers, Rock Raiders, Island 1 & 2, Creator, etc) will not run on Windows 10. DOSBox is not compatible with all games. I still cannot get M1A1 to run on Windows 10 and it works fine on Windows 7.

So far I am trying M1A1 tank sim, won't run. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is struggling to start due to an issue with DOSBox configurations. Still running through my library of games at the moment and struggling to start several of them. Including the Command and Conquer games that are on disc or through the forsaken Origins platform (now EA App). Again there are limitations when trying to play games from the 1990s on today's hardware just because Valve relies too much on a single browser for its own platform.

M1A1 - you may need dxwnd or glidewrapper (designed for diablo but works with others) or simply rebuy it here.

Second one - 1,5$ on GoG; they've reworked game to modern standards.

Regarding some of games, you've mentioned earlier, for example: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Lego_Racers_2

Which C&C?

It's not only Valve, Microsoft dropped those systems as an obsolete and slowly everyone is leaving them behind. There won't be any legacy client etc.

I have hundreds. I spent the better part of three years getting everything ported over to my (then) new Windows 10 machine, including one of the Sim parks and a couple of lego games, and while there were issues here and there, solutions were researched and used.

Now granted, a bunch of my oldest games are being run through a VM or DOSBox as I had many issues transitioning from XP to Win 7, but the transition to 10 was one of the smoothest I ever had, and this goes back to the DOS days.

I literally had no issues with my Steam or EGS libraries, save for one dinky hidden object game that wouldn't launch on Windows 10. That has since been resolved. But every single game in my digital libraries otherwise had not a single issue with the transition.

Retrogaming requires a certain level of effort from the user.

As linked by another user, PCGamingWiki is the best source for that.

You can play your old games on windows 10 and windows 11, but you need to go into the file options and select it to run as an old windows program first to be able to run them

If those old games are so important to you and you're unable to get them running, sounds like you'll need retro Windows 7 box. Valve isn't going to make legacy software because you want to run every game in existence on a single machine and don't want to upgrade your OS.

Besides old games not running on a newer OS/System is the responsibility of the publisher of those games to resolve, not Valve. Although I suspect, like many claims that a game will not run on X, really means you can't get it to run, not that it will not run. Valve isn't responsible for your IT failings.

Frequently claimed in 2023 when a minority of people still on Windows 7 were losing their minds. Very seldom though were actual examples provided, and in the case where examples were provided, evidence was quickly produced that the game, in fact, runs fine on Windows 10/11.

In the worst cases, sometimes you need to download a fix or unofficial patch to make them work, but that's just PC gaming. It's been that way since gaming on a PC was a thing. Even on Windows 7, there are even older games you need to tweak to get them to run properly.

PC Gaming Wiki is about as useful as Wikipedia on most of the games. It only lists information about the games and does not offer solutions on most of the games I have looked up such as https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Sid_Meier%27s_SimGolf

Compatibility mode does not work on most games. I have tried that on various old Lego games like Lego Loco, Lego Land, Lego Chess and the compatibility mode does not work.

A good idea but most games don't have patches or updates either official or unofficial as some are just forgotten about by the PC community completely. Some sites say to just download the game completely off some virus filled website, as it is a "disc free" version, and the files themselves have viruses in them. I have the discs, I just need a way to run them on the current OS rather than on an old machine that is a BSoD away from breakibg down completely.

They are not that important, I just enjoy playing some of these older games. I do have older machines specifically for these purposes but I'd like a solution to playing them on one system. Emulation softwares often fail to run even the most basic of programs. "Disc-less" versions that are available online are frequently filled with viruses and the sites claim to be the only way to run the games. The problem with that is, I have the discs so why bother to download the games from a virus filled website?

many of those disc-based games will fail because microsoft blocked support for safedisc drm in windows 10, not valve.
