How do we know all this bad stuff will happen with up/down votes? Because it already did in the old forums Valve had before they made these current forums that that purposely left out up/down voting.
Just removing the jester will do nothing, people already complain about other awards being used as insults. So you know what the only solution is, remove all of the awards from everywhere on the forums.
It will stop people whining about getting a jester.
It will stop people trolling with jesters.
It will stop people spamming to get awards. (it won't stop spam, but it will lower the amount)
The other thing that can happen till awards are removed is people need to get a thicker skin and stop complaining about getting jesters. The trolls will give people jesters who whine about getting jesters because it gives them a laugh.
Trolls tried giving me jesters to troll my posts, but I didn't react and now they have pretty much given up trying to use it as an insult with my posts because they don't get me foaming at the mouth screaming about people giving me jesters. I just simply don't care about them (other than the spam and junk they create everywhere they can be given) and the whining posts that we keep getting because people can't learn to search the forums and post in one thread instead of making new thread after new thread.
I just sit back and let the points build up and will use them for something someday or I won't if nothing interesting shows up.
Oh and the less like Reddit the steam forums are, the better.
To be honest I'd also be onboard with this, but I don't expect realistically to convince Valve to abandon the system altogether.
I mean at worst you just got some free points to spend on swag.
And as for Upvotes and downvotees./.. utterly meaningless.
It's not about the people receiving the jesters because someone didn't like their take. It's about the people creating flamebait with the express purpose of earning a ton of free points to spend on swag.
Look M8. Keep your eyes in your own book. Other people will spend their poionts however they want, you spend yours how you want.. Mmkaty? Mmm'kay.
And believe it or not some people uise the JEster to uindicate that they found something funny. Now someone might consider this negative but that's their provblem. There are individuals who will take offense if you say Happy Holidays or Merry Xmas to them as well.
Points or not, people will keep making stuff like that as long as there is any way to take advantage of it.
Very bad idea. Do you think Reddit is good? You should just go there then. Jesters are great, they punish downvoters for not adding anything of value.
Aren't the points basically worthless...? Are people really trying to "farm" a certain type of award?
Jester reaction, like the others, is to represent whatever you want it to mean. I'd say it's contextual more than anything. I'd imagine if there's a clown simulator game, the jester rewards would probably be more compliment. I'm not sure if such a game exists.
The goal of posting on the forums or making a guide or what ever is up to the person that makes it. If their goal is to get awards, that is their goal, the points are just an extra. If their goal is to get points, the award is just an extra. If their goal was to troll/spam, getting the awards and points are an added bonus. If their goal is to scam, the awards are a goal, the points are extra...
Again its what ever the persons intent was and everyone has different intents when making a post. My intent for posting is to inform, the awards/points are meaning less to me. I already have more then enough points to get anything I want, I don't give awards to anyone and the only reason why I have them on my profile is because I was accused a number of times of giving out awards to people, so I leave them there so people can see I have given out zero awards.
The points are as worthless as you want to think they are. If you are not getting anything with them at all including not giving out awards, then they are worthless. If you are constantly getting things on the points store and/or giving out any awards then the points are very valuable to you.
Its all up to the eye of the beholder for how useful they are.
And yes there are people who try to farm awards, they don't care if its jesters or not, they just want the awards to scam people, or they want the points to get things.
Like I've noticed the forums become more active if an MMORPG is receiving downtime/updates that prevent players from playing the game. Seems reasonable that they'd have to go somewhere.
I guess I feel that people should have better things to do than try to farm awards...
Wait, how do awards create the ability to scam people?
Clearly I underestimate the number of people that use steam and aren't buying anything. If I didn't buy things, those points would be more rare, I suppose.
So, yeah, to those people that keep getting scammed by this, I know this Prince in Nigeria, and he's trying to emigrate and he's got a lot of money, like millions, and just needs your bank account number so he can wire his money to the country where you live and back to himself, so he can dodge the unfair taxes in his home country, and for your near effortless service, he'll pay you 10%, he just needs a nice person like you to help him out.
This stuff really still works?
