Please update the steam overlay browsers chromium version
I make websites and web-based software. I was excited to build something for Steam users that they could easily use in their Steam overlay, only to find that what I built doesn't work on the current version of chromium used in the overlay (chrome 85). Due to build requirements for the framework I'm using, I'm unable to polyfill the required functionality, and likely need to re-build my entire project with something else.

There are many benefits of bringing the browser version closer to modern standards. Web technology moves fast, and Chrome 85 was back in 2020. Lots of new CSS features are becoming relatively standard including grid and the :has selector, and performance has improved dramatically.

It doesn't have to be the most recent version of Chromium if there is some longstanding reason the team doesn't want to upgrade, but it would be nice if we could be brought up to around version 100.

This was part of the reason Valve dropped support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. So they could update the chromium version.

Side note as a friendly reminder, Valve is cracking down on advertising websites in profile names.

Oh, sweet. So, is this something we could expect in a month or so? Also, how do you know that? I'm just curious where I can stay in the loop.

They talk about some of the reasons here https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4784-4F2B-1321-800A

As for when it might happen, Valve has not said anything publicly yet.

Valve themselves announced it a while ago.

I knew about dropping Windows support but didn't know it was for Chromium. Do devs ever respond in these threads? I know it's not like Valve to give timelines, but it would be nice to know whether I should rebuild my project or wait for the update. (wishful thinking)

Wait, if I'm reading the announcement correctly, is it saying they intend to update chromium, or are they saying that windows 7 / 8 no longer supports the version that they are on (and they don't plan on upgrading)?

I'm in the same boat.
Looks like they updated Steam to an unknown version on Feb 27.
