Add a setting where we can send messages to people who aren't friends with us
And just have a message privacy setting in profile settings that says

Friends only = only friends can message you

Anyone = anyone can message you

No one = no one can message you no matter how many times they try.

Man, sometimes I feel like I angered the wrong god and you are my eternal punishment. XD

But, here's the thing I don't understand.

Who would EVEN consider using the "Anyone" function? That's an invitation to get spammed / harassed or whatever. Strange suggestion for somebody that is concerned about bullying. :shodan:
Join any group chats.

Outside of that, it most likely won't happen.

Joining a group caused stranger danger. So no.

So will this. There is no valid reason to change this from the way it is now, or for a stranger to message another stranger. If you want to message someone, they need to be on your friends list. Easy Peasy.

Zero reason for you to message non-Steam friends.

No there is tons. Playstation and Xbox has this and other platforms. Steam should too. If you don't like the feature you can just put yours on friends only.

Yet another counterproductive "suggestion".

More :poopy: on the walls.

You have zero reason to message me nor anyone else who are NOT on your friends list, after all you have created threads on:

Bullying based solely on others not affirming your opinion, plus certain posters should not reply to your posts etc, therefore this suggestion is both hypocritical and ironic based upon YOU wanting to determine who can communicate with YOU, whilst wanting to communicate with anyone.

Great Ideea. A message request function would be great!
Why does OP keep rehashing suggestions made by other people?

Just like a random stranger messaging a user they aren't friends with.

Steam's Chat function is private as in you need to be friends to send messages and the end user (you) already has control over whom you add to your friends list.

Are you prepared to receive spam, phishing links, etc from non-friends?

Or to put it another way, do you block unsolicited calls or text spam on your mobile? If the answer is yes, then you can see why being contacted via a message by "anyone" on Steam is not needed.

You send a friend request and if they decline they clearly do not want to be friends and clearly do not want to receive messages.

Oh man, scammers would LOVE to not have to add people, just get them to enable a setting.
Heck no, this is a bad idea, just like I said in the last thread from Nov 7 which you could have read if you would have bothered to search and READ.

I know we can't do that, probably because of scams, but it's a bit weird i think because Steam is a social app

Steam is not a social app, its a gaming app which allows you to talk to other gamers.

And no I don't want people who are not on my friends list to spam me with scam and other junk. If you want that, open your profile comments, go find large groups and join the chats.

If Valve were to ever do this, and they should not, it needs to have an on/off switch which is off by default.
