"possible"

maybe they should ban accounts from the forums that demand others not be allowed to post because of their profile settings. that sounds like a much better idea and will help to remove some of the trolls.

There are reasons why people keep their account on friends only or private.
Don't take away people's comfort.
Instead just don't allow accounts <10 levels or whatever value in that parameter to put it on private/friends only.

Most of those accounts likely aren't even private . Just friends Only.

As long a user is in good standing they have the same rights as everyone else, no matter private, friends only or public profile. That's fine nothing wrong with that.

All we need is the return of permaban to combat the trolling.

you all just need a bigger forum with more people, like for real you got so few people you think everyone is a troll, lemme fill you in real users can see the problems and they talk about it, there are more people in a csgo 2 match then this forum supports on most threads.

privacy isn't the issue its because the forum is so small everyone knows everyone and unless your a bootlicker at the heels of steam you get deemed "troublemaker"

I have seen people with public (open) profiles who would still go around trolling, so it's not just a private profile thing. In fact, I had someone send me a friend request before, and I accepted because I didn't know at the time that they enjoyed trolling the forums for fun. Thankfully, I learned right away their true colors because they openly bragged to me that they got a kick out of trolling. They would change their username, their personality, their background, and so on daily just so that they could troll off-topic. They even came clean to me and said they were racist. So, basically, I asked them to please stop trolling around if they wished to remain friends with me, but they kept making excuses as to why they felt the need to do that. Ultimately, I had to remove them from my friends list because I don't wish to affiliate with people like that. In fact, I also blocked them so that when they make up another personality to troll the OT with by changing their username, profile picture, etc., I can easily tell it's them and avoid them.

And?
I mean what does that have to do with anything. I'm sure if you start tallying in the various game forums and sub forums you'll get a pretty sizeable population using the forums. Then if you tag Group public group forums, private group forums... profile comments.

Yeah people are talking. Lots of them. Just not where YOU can see m8.

So you're basically calling everyone who manages to follow the rules and guidelines and partake in healthy honest discussion a 'bootlicker'?

I'm not convinced that a majority or even plurality of trolls use private accounts. Those are just the one's that seem to stick in people's minds, because they are for whatever reason, compelled to look at their profile.

Even if it this was the case though, the change does nothing. Being able to see someone's profile details isn't going to prevent someone from trolling that wants to do so.

People trying to find dirt on others should not be allowed to comment on threads. The contents of my profile are none of your business.

Alt account with public profile. There you go.

It's not like most scammers or trolls have very public profiles so they look like 'normal' users anyway.

Imagine getting punished because of privacy, good job, such smart, everyone clapping...

People can have private profile, or friends only, they have their own reasons for doing it, just like have options to hide your games, or friends on profile there's reasons for that as well.

Or redesign how trolling is handled.

Like limiting max posts per day, and increasing ban time for repeat offenses.
And shortening of cooldowns for prolonged good behavior.
That's already a thing, except the last part.

The irony is... scammers are unlikely to set their account to private, since making it public allows them to blend in.

Setting an account to private is the go-to "solution" any time someone complains about... being stalked on Steam, being trolled, wanting to not show certain games, wanting to block comments on profile, and a whole myriad of other things.

There should be no disadvantage for having an account set to private.

This "suggestion" of punishing private profiles is NEVER made for actually good reasons.

Private accounts have nothing to do with trolling or botting or whatever label to you want to attach to it. I can easily pick out dozens of accounts that are alts of certain users that are used for nothing but trolling or gaslighting the forums:

i make it a personal goal to get banned almost every day, so i can just load up another free throw away steam account and upset the same 20 people so they have a mental meltdown and cry to steam support.

So perhaps the biggest issue that needs to be dealt with are alt accounts and the weakness and/or lack of escalating bans, including permabans.

Intelligent and genuine discussions can be had when there is a concerted effort to have them in good faith. That clearly is not the desire here. So those who do not wish to do so in good faith can be, and should be, summarily dismissed. The times have changed. This isn't the Internet of the 90's, nor should it be. Those who do not wish to be part of the mature nature of a global factual forum are not the future, nor should, or will, they ever be.

however you have to realize that by label people you are intentionally accusing and judging individuals , which in itself is part of the corruption taking place.
