Don't take away people's comfort.
Instead just don't allow accounts <10 levels or whatever value in that parameter to put it on private/friends only.
All we need is the return of permaban to combat the trolling.
privacy isn't the issue its because the forum is so small everyone knows everyone and unless your a bootlicker at the heels of steam you get deemed "troublemaker"
I mean what does that have to do with anything. I'm sure if you start tallying in the various game forums and sub forums you'll get a pretty sizeable population using the forums. Then if you tag Group public group forums, private group forums... profile comments.
Yeah people are talking. Lots of them. Just not where YOU can see m8.
So you're basically calling everyone who manages to follow the rules and guidelines and partake in healthy honest discussion a 'bootlicker'?
Even if it this was the case though, the change does nothing. Being able to see someone's profile details isn't going to prevent someone from trolling that wants to do so.
It's not like most scammers or trolls have very public profiles so they look like 'normal' users anyway.
People can have private profile, or friends only, they have their own reasons for doing it, just like have options to hide your games, or friends on profile there's reasons for that as well.
That's already a thing, except the last part.
Setting an account to private is the go-to "solution" any time someone complains about... being stalked on Steam, being trolled, wanting to not show certain games, wanting to block comments on profile, and a whole myriad of other things.
There should be no disadvantage for having an account set to private.
So perhaps the biggest issue that needs to be dealt with are alt accounts and the weakness and/or lack of escalating bans, including permabans.
Intelligent and genuine discussions can be had when there is a concerted effort to have them in good faith. That clearly is not the desire here. So those who do not wish to do so in good faith can be, and should be, summarily dismissed. The times have changed. This isn't the Internet of the 90's, nor should it be. Those who do not wish to be part of the mature nature of a global factual forum are not the future, nor should, or will, they ever be.
