Ability to upload Clips
And I don't mean just linking your YouTube channel. Literally uploading clips at a certain length or size (25, 50 or 100 MB) directly to our profiles/Steam and the community. I understand this would take up quite some bandwidth. However uploading short videos directly to the platform like we do with gifs would be great.

This would be great, there should also be something like a new clip showcase.

They just recently dropped the size of images you can upload from 8 megs to 5 megs and you think they will add an option to upload much larger video files?

No they won't be doing that, because having that much storage space, for free, is expensive. They would either have to add a bunch of ads from 3rd parties to pay for it (like all other video hosting sites do), which going by Valve stance on ads they won't do.

Or they would need to charge you for that space and that could be as little as 20 to 50 dollars per month. This is more then likely the route they would take to host videos...

Or you could just keep uploading them to youtube or what ever video hosting site you use now.

I don't think people would have a problem paying for that stuff. But the quesiton is, why you want to make users pay when each user already has a certain amount of free space available?

Are you both telling me a billion dollar company can’t afford such hosting? Lol. Even Discord allows 50 MB and you don’t necessarily have to pay them a dime. You can literally make 20 second clips at 25 MB.

There are other ways instead of YouTube as well. They could add other linking options such as say imgur.

Not to mention the company makes enough money off video game percentage sales. Considering greedy developers are now over charging us for their mediocre unfinished games.

Afford? Sure.
Ready to waste money for nothing in return? No.
Valve is not a charity.
Tristin 8 NOV 2023 a las 6:49 a. m.
This is a good idea. Since Steam have a 'Broadcast' streaming service available, this could be bundled together to save broadcast clip or upload. TBH, Steam streaming is still very premature and needs lot of work however.

They’re making a percentage off everything they sell on here. Waste money? For 25 MB uploading? Oh wow. Really gonna break the bank getting a few more servers to host uploading for videos.

Not to mention the countless of other opportunities other than YouTube I mentioned.

I have yet to see anyone say "I will pay Steam 50 bucks a month (or what ever amount) for them to host videos that I make in games. Every single one asking for this feature wants it for free.

That being said, there are a whole lot of other issues that come with video uploading.

Copyright infringement enforcement would need to be stepped up even more, after all just look at the RIAA and MPAA going after other video hosting sites. Some places are still trying to put laws into place that would force companies to check every single video being uploaded for Copyrighted stuff and to block those uploads. A feat that is near impossible for every video hosting site just because of the amount videos uploaded. Youtube for example is around 400 hours of video uploaded every minute.

The 2 gigs of free space that people get now, when it comes to videos, is not much space. We already see people complaining about it not being enough for their screenshots and other stuff they upload. Imagine how much complaining there will be once people upload 2 to 10 "clips" and find they are out of space. Remember people are going to upload 4k clips, 1080p already take up a large size.

Valve could transcode the videos to some smaller format and delete the original, but that requires lots of processing on their server end and that would cost them more money. They would also no doubt have people complaining about the video quality. But even then depending on the quality and the size of the video even ones transcoded into another more compressed size will take up a large size.

You also have the issue of people uploading stuff that is not gaming related, that would take a lot of extra support to get rid of videos like that. If they did add video uploading for a price, it should also come with the consequence that if you upload something that isn't game video with its own audio all your videos will be wiped, you will be perma banned from uploading videos and banned from even viewing videos on Steam. And this could be done by blocking anyone not logged in and even accounts that have not put in the 5 bucks.

Then you also have bandwidth costs. Videos use up FAR more bandwidth then some images. Valve can justify the bandwidth for games because people keep buying them. But if people are watching a bunch of free videos people upload, to their free service.

In the end hosting videos would be far more costly then just some gifs and jpgs. Personally I don't even think people should be able to upload gifs.

Like I said.

You can literally upload clips at 25, 50 or 100 MB. There’s software for that you know. At 1440p and 4k. Steelseries does this with their moments.gg and it still looks amazing. No one’s asking for 60 minute videos here.

You guys are making it sound impossible for a billion dollar company to shell out a few more servers or getting more bandwidth.

YouTube scans videos just fine with their algorithm. So does SoundCloud and etc. Just use the same thing.

Yet again. You can add other linking options rather than just YouTube to link accounts and upload these videos or short clips. Such as say Imgur, which would also help for GIFs too. So that makes your money argument even more irrelevant.

All I’m hearing from you is excuses that hold no merit.

Yes they make a lot of money.... and they also spend out a lot of money on other stuff to keep things running.

You also ignored that I pointed out Valve recently dropping the size of stuff that can be uploaded from 8 to 5 megs. Why do you think they would allow 25+ meg files to be uploaded?

You also ignore the fact that youtube and other video hosting sites run 3rd party advertising to pay for those videos being uploaded and watched. Something Valve does not seem interested in doing as they could easily run 3rd party advertising and rake in even more money. But they don't.

They had linking to videos on youtube... youtube changed things now people have a hard time linking videos if I remember right. I'm pretty sure they are done with linking to stuff outside of steam like that. You can always put links to stuff like Youtube and Imgur into a custom info box.

Also news flash... overcharging for mediocre unfinished games is not a new thing. Been happening for decades and not just on Steam. I've bought many games over the years that were "ready for release" or even "finished" and they were buggy messes. I've also bought lots that ran great and I couldn't spot bugs but were still being updated with bug fixes. It also has nothing to do with your suggestion. Never preorder, wait at least a month after release, ask questions BEFORE buying and you avoid most of these issues.

They have and will ask to be able to upload larger and larger files. People have asked Valve to give us free 2 Terabytes of space so they can upload videos.

The amount of space required for 1 billion account, or even just the active 140+ million a month going by bulk prices that you can find from large data centers would cost Valve more per month then they make in an entire year.

Storage costs lots of money. If you had read any of the other threads on this topic, it was pointed out many times just how expensive it would be. As mentioned above, more per month then they make in a year.

And people still complain about the video quality and how its very compressed. Also you do know that each quality you want, you have to have the space for each size, they don't do transcoding on the fly to each person. So if even Valve limited it to 1080p, 1440p and 4k they need storage space for all 3 files.

And again Youtube puts ads on everything there. SoundCloud at least sells small audio files for a buck each I think and has ads. Thats how they pay for stuff.

My pointing out all the problems and why its more then likely never going to happen, is not excuses. And just because you don't like they doesn't mean they don't hold merit. You just refuse to accept that there are some major challenges and that Valve just might not want to get into video hosting because of all the problems and costs with it.
