If I don't run a virus as administrator, can they do any damage?
What can a virus do exactly if I don't run as admin?

“Virus” is too-broad a category for a reasonable answer.

Also, this section is meant for ideas and suggestions related to the Steam client or services — this topic would be a better fit elsewhere. :chslime::largegoo::greenslime:

W..w..why would you want to run a virus at all?  @.@

I wouldn't, but I'm thinking in a general sense on how I would go about running programs I installed on the internet
Stuff you downloaded from the ‘net?
Yeah

* encrypt your files and demand a ransom
* plant illegal files and threaten to call the police
* copy your valuable files and leak, etc
* delete stuff for giggles
* watch you enter passwords
* escalate privileges and do stuff
* use your passwords to access your email, etc accounts, and do whatever it wants, such as steal money or send itself to contacts
* add your machine to a botnet
* destroy your centrifuges
* anything you can do

get a virtual machine

A lot - since there is usually an elevation of privilege exploit used to do whatever is necessary.
Fascinating. I have the author of the OP blocked, and now I see why. I'm torn between an earnest response and a smart-assed one.

Sure. Run it. It cannot hurt anything. Well, it wouldn't, if you kept your important stuff on an external drive, which is NOT connected to your main PC while you are clicking files from unknown sources or streaking through the internet.

In our company, some dumb-ass opened a file. It infected the entire network. Everyone, who logged into the network, had their files encrypted. It was not an admin. It was a normal user, and not a very smart one. Quite common now-a-days to have people using computers, who have no idea what they are doing. I was in home-office and only ever logged into the network when I absolutely had to. Logging in from home was a pain in the ass.

So, now you can decide. Best course of action, so that YOU don't look shall we say intellectually-challenged is to research the topic. There are tons of tech magazines that address the issue of cyber security, especially viruses.

Or, you can come to the Steam forums and ask questions here that you should know the answer to, if you were a real gamer, and let everyone else know that you have no idea at all about your computer, but want to pretend to be a gamer.

At least I'm not hiding behind a lame award.

You have... the author of the OP blocked. Huh.

I would love to know the criteria to be a "real gamer" do I have to spend the equivalent of a college degree on a competitive game, wasting my life? I thought gaming was supposed to be fun just press install and play fun games you come by?

What award lmao can someone tell me if this guy is troling, obviously private profile big red flag

I see what you did there :profgenki:
A: You're in the wrong forum.
B: Yes. You may need to be admin for some things, but running under the permissions of the user gives the software the ability to do everything you can. Such as delete all of your save games, change your password, or steal all the saved passwords out of your browser.
