Using Steam Points to redeem for games

I saw a locked post a few years ago that talked about a suggestion that Steam Points should be able to be redeemed for games. I think its a good idea and those that were insulting those that brought up the idea don't know the structures of a successful loyalty program. I work in the airline industry, and we have a loyalty program where customers can accrue miles that don't expire for both spending on a particular branded credit card and for other things, but primarily for the customer ticketed completing revenue travel. They then redeem said miles for tickets using those miles they have accrued, sometimes in large numbers. You think that that is a losing business model? Tell that to the billions of dollars in profit the airline industry has earned over the past 10+ years. If you can earn points to spend on games, you will be more inclined to spend on the platform for the games you want, and the more you spend the more you earn toward that next game you can buy with your points.

People need to calm down out here and respect other's opinions.

The respect must be mutual. I can respect your suggestion but you in turn have to respect that atm valve does not have this as a feature and there is little chance they will.

Few years ago? There's one just about every other day wanting to use Steam Points in some form or fashion to get games for free or reduced prices.

The airline loyalty programs are subsidized through other means. The airlines actually don't make money from selling seats but by selling the loyalty programs. They are basically banks that fly planes. Good video about that from Wendover Productions here:

Steam Points are not subsidized at all. There is no value behind them. That's why you only get profile customizations or emotes or stickers for them. Unless Valve comes out with a Steam Loyalty Rewards Mastercard, I doubt you'll ever see points used for anything monetarily.

You're expecting too much from the gaming community, my friend.

As for your suggestion, although I'd like to see that happening the chances are tiny.

Luckily, there is an alternative, though: you can purchase Steam games from key sellers that do this.

Nah bigs. This might be a case of the community regretting what it asked for. People were complaining that The points expired and that you could only get them by spendingduring a certain period.. so Steam changed it...

Which would mean expiring all the points people already had stockpiled because lets be frank.. Valve aren't idiots. They know how consumers work.

So yeah they could go back you only being able to earn Points from purchases made during sales events and have any left over points expiring...

and how well do you think that would go down with the community. Keep in mind the reason they changed it in the first place is because people were complaining that they expired.

No matter which way they go Valve will have some users pissed and complaining.
At least this way.. well there's a bit more that can be done with points and quite frankly they're more accessible to the wider userbase.

Yeah And if EPic 's store were actually profitable, that would be a good point. Buhe store is losing money. At this point I thing Sweeney is using the store as some UWe Boll level tax loophole scheme.

Oh that wouldn't be a problem. Back then there were no point awards. You could only get points by spending money.

I'm not willing to give it a chance. The boards I frequent already get enough low effort bait topics all for the purpose of farming awards regularly as it is. Usually see between 2 to 7 threads of them on the front page regularly.

eh, easy solution for that, only have points gained through purchasing be eligible for conversion to reward money. So you would see something like 100,000 Points (30,000 eligible for reward money)

I can easily earn thousands of points per dollar using in game items and selling them on the Market at a small loss.

Sooo, Valve still made money from those purchases you made, and then made money from the person that purchased your item you resold.

I don't see the issue here, it still all comes out the same.

Not enough to cover the coupon/voucher.
