E-Mail notifications for specific threads/forums
Creating a thread in Suggestions / Ideas for this, from this thread in Help.

Repeating what I wrote there:
Valve needs to add a checkbox under the Subscribe button with the text "Get E-Mail Notifications" (or something similar), see my mockup here[imgur.com]. To stop getting e-mails but still sub, you just unsub and sub again with the checkbox unchecked (other methods can, of course, also be used, such as having a button to toggle the e-mails, as is common on most forums). Then, they can add options for how often you receive the mails somewhere, once per day or instantly being the standard options. And wait a few minutes before sending the e-mail, in case you're browsing the thread.

If set to instant notifications, you still only get one e-mail until you have checked the thread. That way, you won't be spammed with e-mails in case of a very active thread. Would be perfect.

This could also possibly be added to the new notifications settings that are available in the beta client, e-mail options for each category. However, I would also like the option to subscribe to threads/forums individually (so the e-mail option for forum subscriptions is if you get e-mails at all and you still have to choose the ones you want it for).

Not something I'd use but I'm not against it for those that would. Provided it's an opt-in like you suggest I'd be fine with it.

Yeah and the boxes should be unchecked by default, too.

This is something people have been asking for for years.

Unfortunately it seems Valve is not going to do it.

As someone who ran a much, much smaller forum than this one, sending emails for every post is expensive and more importantly will likely lead to the forum's email server getting marked as spam.

Valve may be able to pay for a lot more than a private forum owner, don't you think? All e-mail clients have a way to mark senders as not being spam, so your second point is invalid.

and yet for whatever reason STEAM sends you an e-mail for each individual award you give, with no way to turn it off.

Those emails include a link to https://help.steampowered.com/wizard/HelpWithAccountStolen

There's a reason they send an email whenever you spend a currency, even if that currency isn't exchangeable for USD.

lol

Yeah, I guess there are a lot of people stealing accounts to give out awards, and without that email, one would never know that their account has been stolen
