could steam profiles using SAM be marked with some kind of red icon?
I dont mean ban or something like that. Just some kind of red badge or icon so you could see if their achievements are legitimetly aquired or unlocked via programs.

edit: sorry for broken english

There's literally no way to tell if SAM was used. The exact same thing can be done with sharing a save file or unlocking them while Steam is offline.

You can even use the console to unlock them so, not really.

Steam Achievement Manager a 3rd party software that lets you unlock achievements.

Yep, as stated unlocking an achievement with SAM looks identical to Steam as unlocking it via playing the game. Steam doesn't care if people cheat achievements, the majority of the userbase isn't obsessed with other people's achievements

Interesting. Does it work for every game, or just games that allow mods?

What's the motive behind this suggestion? To feel better about your own achievements?
Chronocide Sep 5, 2023 @ 12:01pm
In any case, isn't achievements more about personal achievement than about showing off?

Reminds me of that American Dad episode where they try to explain to Roger why not earning trophies isn't the same as having trophies.

I don't really see a problem with your 3rd party SAM thing, provided it's free. If you need unearned trophies to feel good, that seems like something you should have.

Anyone can go to a trophy shop, in real life, and get trophies for anything. "world's best lover" or "greatest dad ever" or whatever. Not sure why steam should be any different.

Does steam give prizes for achievements or something?

PS: I did play a game with a mod one time and accidentally awarded myself an unearned achievement for something. Still haven't figured out how to remove it. Does this SAM allow players to remove (and then earn again) Steam achievements? Might be fun to play some of these games with a fresh start.

Since the original question was already answered in that Steam cannot tell when SAM has been used, I'll just leave this here:

There are a myriad of ways that achievements can be manipulated other than with SAM, such as:
-Have a friend or family member help or complete the achievement for you.
-Edit the game files.
-Use someone else's game save file.
-Use a dev console or cheat codes.
-Take advantage of in game mechanics or features to bypass the "normal" route.
-Exploit bugs.
-Mods - either external or from the Steam Workshop
-Multi-boxing
-Win Trading
-Achievement Servers
-Steam User Console

That last option is of particular interest as Valve has built into Steam itself a way to trigger or reset achievements just like SAM does, therefore, making it a viable method without consequence.

Further note that achievements are a personal goal that devs started to implement in games as a way to prolong game play and engagement with the product. So they are nothing more than an optional personal challenge - nothing more and nothing less. Always have been and always will be.

Yes, you can also remove earned achievements with SAM.
As for re-earning them ingame, that's probably game/achievement dependent. Might work for some whereas it might not work for others.

Considering how PC is open and with console sharing that can unlock all achievements you've got from your owned console at the same time, it's pointless to mark anyone with red.

PC achievements are people's bragging rights, nothing more.

Don't forget owning a game on another service (EA) will grant you all achievements when you start the EA game on Steam, after purchasing it.

I got quite a few BF achievements unlocked at once because of that.
