Will they make a steam deck that's more pocketable?
Like a psp sized one.
Something I can fit in the pocket.
The steam deck looks kinda big. Id rather get a laptop if I can't fit it in the pocket.
I bet it's a good unit.
Fit in the pocket, plays the games, runs windows. Powerfull to run games at max settings.
One day. Maybe in another decade i hope. Sooner the better.

But don't count on it, the thing is as small as its going to get. If anything a Steam Deck 2 might get a slight bit bigger in the future to accommodate larger M.2 drives.

If they were to make it smaller, it would have to be less powerful and that is not something people want. If anything people want it to be more powerful.

I think you over did it there.

Even in another decade a pocket sized system isn't going to be able to match its contemporary laptop or desktop PC brethren.

Certainly not today. It would require a lot of impossible black magic to pull off such a thing today.

SteamDeck in its current state can't run current game on max settings, so i don't see how a more compact device could.

tech gets better every year. Games get pretty demanding.

Sure but you're expecting it to become more compact and more powerful at the same time. That won't happen for a while.

Steam deck is more powerful then the PC i built in 2013. have a 680 gtx in there. Whatever was best at the time. Then witcher 3 came out a year later or something. Got upset. To demanding.

Yes tech gets better every year not usually by much, it doesn't mean it gets smaller.

Laptops today are generally the same size as ones from 20 years ago. Some are thinner but it didn't take only 2 or 3 years for them to get to that thin, also thinner doesn't mean better, it just means thinner.

Portables are super compact even compared to laptops.

So if you want more powerful, its going to be bigger because its going to need better cooling. If you want it smaller, its going to be less powerful because its going to have access to less cooling.

Also you do know the insides of the deck were being worked on for years before it was made public right? The APU inside of it was a custom made one in collaboration with AMD, which took years.

Now if Valve was smart they would have been working on a Deck 2 as soon as they shipped the first one, and would be planning on it to be better and learn from the mistakes of the first one.

A bit thicker to provide more space inside for a physically larger NVMe drive (maybe 2 of them), better cooling, bigger battery and more powerful chip, which could easily cancel out the bigger battery. Also ability to pump out 1080p and maybe more USB-C

yes and 8 years went by between the release of the hardware in that PC and the Deck.

You also do know that the hardware takes many years to be worked on right? The CPU/GPU started being designed about 4 or 5 years before their release.

The APU in the deck while a custom design is based off a last gen APU and tweaked for Valve. But it took years to design it.

The CPUs/GPUs that are being released right now, have been in the works for 5 years and thats with 3 or 4 teams over leaping each other. Team one worked on Zen then after a little while Team 2 worked on Zen 2 learning from mistakes Team 1 made. After Zen 1 was released, Team 1 moved onto working on Zen 3.... and so on. So while we might see new CPUs/GPUs being released every couple of years, they have been working on those chips for many years before.

You're not going to get "AAA" games to play at max settings on anything that will fit in your pocket. Even the cell phone that fits in your pocket that is more powerful than many early PCs won't be able to play your Starfield on maxed out settings. There's a bit more to creating a portable than picking a CPU/GPU chips off the shelf and cramming it into a small package.

Portables like a PSP, DS, even going back to Gameboy, none of those matched the hardware capabilities of the consoles they were based off of. They also had portable-specific versions of the games that were optimized for that portable. They were stripped down versions to comply with the reduced capabilities of the portable. So Steam could come out with a small portable but they'd need the publishers to strip their games down to comfortably play on it.

Generally tech can only get so small or be so small to have a level of computational power. I doubt they could any decade soon have a pocket version that could be adequately powerful and not burn through the battery.
