Personally I don't agree on it. Survivors is a broad term that isn't confined to just those types of games.
Bullet Hell Survivor, or something similar, is better suited.
At least it's nowhere as bad as M.ultiplayer O.nline B.attle A.rena which fits a lot of modern competitive FPS games.
Go to the storepage of the game. On the right click the plus icon where the tags are. On the right there is a section to add tag with a type box. Put it in and hit add. Once enough people add that tag it will show on the storepage.
Survivors-like games are basically Bullet Hell/Heaven or Reverse Bullet Hell games.
It's all in the Steamworks documentation. Developers who told you it's automatic clearly did not read the material.
