It's got a dock, it is a home console as much as Nintendo Switch is... (I love my Switch)

At some point the cost is the cost and no amount of gymnastics is going to lower the prices more.

I'm sure it could be a bit cheaper if it didn't have a screen and built in controls.

Valve already said getting the Deck to the price it is was painful, in other words its as cheap as its going to get without them losing money.

I suppose they could take out the controllers and the screen and make it cheaper... but then you might as well just go out and buy yourself a slightly more powerful desktop for about the same bit of money (which is all a "console" for steam would be).

The reason why stuff like the deck and laptops cost so much is the "miniaturization" that needs to be done to squeeze everything in. If you got the same kind of parts in a PC it would be about as expensive but more upgradeable and more then likely more powerful just because it would be able to use more power. But it would also be much bigger.

So ya, a console for Steam would just be a computer. Also Valve did sell "consoles" before, they were called Steam Machines. They were over priced and under powered. They didn't last long. Just go buy a prebuilt if you don't know how to build a PC.

But then how would that be different from a mini-pc?

Have multiple sku's and increased inventory carry their own costs though. And what is the demand for a Steam Deck without a screen or controls?

Other than being setup and configured to run the SteamOS & compatible games, not much different.

Not everyone wants to port their gaming around, but would still like to have something easy to setup and configure that can play games on something that's not a console full of overpriced games that rarely go on sale.

The problem with the original Steam Machines was 3rd parties weren't ever going to see revenue from game sales like conventional consoles do. Valve on the other hand, does see those profits. So they can afford to build a Steam Machine that doesn't have to earn huge profits on the hardware to eventually see more sales of the software. Especially from people that don't want to spend thousands on a gaming rig and are fine if some games don't play at the highest settings.

It’s quite cheap as it is right now

All Valve really would have to do is release SteamOS 3.0 publicly then anyone who wanted could install it into their computers and make it work like Steam Deck.

are you sure though miniaturization are expensive? from where i came from an rtx gpu has the same price of a gaming laptop with the same rtx w/ i5 and 8gb ram, and building a pc to have the same spec as an xbox/ps5 will cost 2-3 time of that, reasons i dont buy consoles because all of my games are in steam and buying a decent mini/prebuild pc will cost the same/higher than a gaming laptop. the reason i suggest this idea it because i want to have hardware that i can carry easily and just plug and play just like playstation tv

Tht's literally been the case for almost a decade now.

Yeah but do you actually need an RTX card to play a game. You really don't.
In fact you can generally build a system with the same spacs as a console but it will cost yuou more because consoles are in many cases sold at a loss.

Except SteamOS 3 used in Steam Deck has not been released for public. You can only download outdated SteamOS 2.
