Heck for the age gate thing most people have a birthday of Jan 1st. No one I know actually put in their real birthday.
If Valve were to ever put something like this, it must have an on/off switch and off by default. If you turn it on to spam others with your birthday, to try to get presents (which is why I feel you really want this) and other birthday wishes then you should be forced to get them from everyone on your friends list that has it on.
And to stop it from being abused by being turned on just before your birthday and turned off just after, once you turn it on, it can't be turned off for a full year, and once turned off, you will no longer spam people will your birthday, but it will take a full year before you stop getting birthday spam from everyone else.
There of course should be some warnings and reminders of what will happen and how long things will take before turning it on and off just so people can't say "I didn't know". It should be 2 or 3 check boxes that they have to check with an ok button at the end.
If you want people to know your birthday, leave it on your profile. People that care about stuff like that will see it and wish you a happy birthday.

Honestly, this platform is already on the trajectory of becoming more and more like other social media. So why not?
They will not save your birthday for age gates.
The obvious reason for Valve to really consider this would be another way to increase revenue. All of the sudden friends feel more compelled to do (or buy) something for someone they care about.
I like your idea, because I’m one of those people who forget about my friends’ birthdays. I have to put it on the calendar in my phone.
Obviously, your friends should also have the right to turn those kinds of notifications off if they don’t want to know it’s your birthday.
Because I forget many times my best friends remind me that it's their birthday, and what can I offer them? a game from their wish list obviously.
Yes, I think valve will benefit from this suggestion. I agree 100% with everything you said. Bravo.
