steam playing catch up again, outdated piece of ♥♥♥♥, bahahaha

Send messages silently. It’s like slipping a note to your friend. Add `@silent` at the very beginning of your message to send it without any push or desktop notifications. Recipients will still see the red dot, just no alert.

suggestion/idea:

provide users an option to send a "silent" message that has no audible notification but has the visible notifications.
this allows them to, should they be the empathetic type, send a message that won't interrupt or distract audibly, but still make a visual change so the message won't be completely missed.

There is a setting in the friend's list that allows the user to turn off the sound when they receive a message.

They can keep the visual notification and only remove the sound.
Think OP wants the person sending the message to be able to decide if its silent or not which makes no sense.

I mean the person RECIEVING the message is the one who gets to decide how they get notified. If i want to be stealth messaged i'll set it that way.
And what happens when the sender forgets to check the silent option?

It was a bad idea two years ago, and it's still a bad idea now. The receiver should always have the choice on how they are notified of messages. If they forget to check Invisible or DnD, then that is on them, and easily fixed within moments if they get a message.

Agree 100%, i mean if someone calls me on my phone they shouldn't get to decide if I receive the call as silent or not, that's for me to decide.

I just noticed something with the link shared. This update to Discord was only 3 days ago. Discord is the only service I've heard of where they have that function.

It's a very new idea so I'm hard pressed to see how it's Steam playing catch-up. I would like to see usage stats after it's been out for a while though.
Yeah definitely a hard pass on the OP being able to take away my rights on how I get notified. If i didn't want to be disturbed in game then i'd use the DND mode to note that. Otherwise other people shouldn't get to decide for me.
Already exist Psy . Though the settings are on the recipients side . Becauise you know, the person receiving the message may have their own opreferences. So it's unlikely that Steam is gioing to give you a tool to directly bypass the preferences of someone else.
How YOU receive messages is why the settings are in YOUR preferences and NOT on the senders end.

Funny how everyone didn't bother reading the post, nor the link he provided. Your feedback is dismissed.

To OP: Great idea, hopefully we'll see this one day.

Everything posted here was 100% on topic about who is in charge of this preference and it is not the sender.

:qr:
if the person receiving the message does not have "do not disturb" on, why would the sender assume that they do not want to be disturbed and click this?

Horrible idea. Most people have no desire for their preferences to be subverted by someone else's selection.

As is yours.

Everyone understands what is being asked.

It's a way to send a message that overrides whatever the user settings are of the person you are sending it to. The article is about a Discord update that only happened 3 days ago that allows the sending of messages without notifying the recipient past the 'badge' that appears in Discord.

If a user doesn't want to receive a notification, there are settings in the Friend's settings that allow customizing notifications to the point of completely silencing them to having every available notification go off.

The criticism is that it shouldn't be up to the sender to decide if the notification is received or not. It should be in control of the one receiving the message.
