Adding a calculator within the in game overlay.
When opening the in game overlay it would be nice to have a calculator so that whenever one is needed I don't have to Alt+Tab as sometimes this crashes certain games and is a hassle if multiple calculations are needed.

that just feels like unnecessary bloat. Just play games in windowed mode, or get a second monitor if you REALLY need basic stuff like that while you game. Out of curiousity, what games in particular are you needing a calculator for? I can't really think of any fun math-related games for adults on Steam.

Why not just use a real calculator? Or your phone?

Why would I buy a second monitor simply to use a calculator? Playing a game in windowed mode isn't ideal for most games as it makes the screen have a bar at the top that i do not like one bit. I use a calculator for Total War games the most but there are several other games that I use one for too.

I do not own a smartphone and I rarely play games on my laptop at home so it would be not very ideal to have to carry a calculator around too or remember it. I do not like computer carrying cases so I just carry the laptop on its own for personal ease.

Why would Steam implement a function that comes installed on every computer and also can also easily be found online? Why shouldn't they instead, implement features that work for users that only Steam can provide thats not even found on their computer? Features that count as that are chat, Family Sharing, achievements, the ability to filter games are some Steam already provides. Why should they put in a calculator rather than a new feature under the category of those?

just because they could add it doesnt mean it makes any practical sense to add it

most smartphones have a calculator function by default as well as Windows so it kinda feels like wanting to reinvent the wheel

also if you need a calculator so much ingame, you can open up google within the steam overlay browser and use their built in calculator function.

I would rather not have the extra bloat for something that I doubt 99.999% will ever use.

If you need to do so much stuff on a calculator that you want valve to build one into steam...

Have a piece of paper and pen handy.
Buy a small pocket calculator to carry around for you.
Get a very cheap smart phone, you don't even need to buy phone time. Bonus to this is that it can play games, listen to music, keep lists of stuff and other stuff all in your pocket. I've seen semi decent them as low as $70 or $80 CDN dollars, though I would learn more towards one thats $150 to $200 CDN just to keep it more useable for stuff.

I don't get why y'all answers are so bitter. I'm 100% behind wanting a calculator in the steam overlay as well.

I do not want to have to use my phone for that and I do not want to play in windowed mode.
So currently, I've been stuck switching windows between my game and the calculator and it's just not great.
I play factorio, do calculations then write them in game and I have to keep switching because I cannot make my calculator sticky since it's not integrated in the steam overlay.

I guess I can try the web page trick but it's a bit clunky.

Because its unnecessary bloat thats why we don't want it. There are already many ways to have access to a calculator outside of steam.

People want to turn steam into an everything app, as it it does everything... Apps like that are just bloat. They take up more space on the computer and they use up more ram just sitting there doing nothing.

You not wanting to use an actual calculator or your phone is not a reason to include it in the Steam client itself.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
