Allow us to change the browser
Let's be honest, not a single person has ever said "wow the internet browser steam uses sure is great!" Let me change it to Firefox. I'd almost rather use Internet explorer.

Just use an actual browser? I can't even remember when was the last time I used the client for anything else than the library view.

Well id love to avoid it but since valve decided to leave those of us that bought mōíves and episode out in the cold, I have no choice but to watch them in the browser because they don't work in the steam client.

Wait, are you somehow watching them while playing/running a game? When I double-click a video it opens in my regular browser.

They discontinued the client web player to watch them.

Are you saying I can't watch them at all?

In the Steam client, no.

If anyone is confused about what the topic is actually about, here is the context...

Don't use the built-in Steam client's browser.

Frankly speaking it shouldn't even contain a browser. It should just be a launcher. It's a design mistake that they decided to make the launcher have a browser-based GUI.

Does -no-browser still work? I'd launch Steam with that, preferably. Then, maintain a Steam login in an actual full-function browser. This is useful for multiple reasons, both security (makes it easier to identify phishing pages) and convenience (regular browsers keep history which is useful for finding what happened to threads that now show up as "moved or deleted" on one's notifications).

Yes, browser freedom would be great and much safer.

Also the Steam browser cannot zoom.

Unfortunately, browsers aren't interchangeable components; embeddable browsers don't have a single standardised interface, so you can't just pull one out and plug another one in. Trying to put in Firefox would be trying to jam a square peg into a round hole.

I'm not even sure that Firefox/Gecko has particularly good support for embedding right now; there's been a few efforts to make it happen over the years, but they all seem to have quietly died. The latest I can find is a request from the community to make a Firefox/Gecko alternative to CEF[connect.mozilla.org].

In a perfect world, you'd want to get people from Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Mozilla into a room and not let them leave until they did standardise an embedded browser interface, and it would improve the situation immensely.

I totally want this too! I have looked for ways to do it, but the browser is built into Steam, and not a separate applet that you can tinker with. Only Valve could ever change this. Its pretty useless and should come with some sort of ad-blocker or atleast the ability to disable flash and java popups which plague the likes of fandom, IGN etc

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
