Free game every week
Sure it's already been mentioned, but to keep up with the neighbors across the street I think Steam should copy Epic Games modality and release a "good" game or two every couple weeks for free.

Free games happen. What you want are very specific games that you specifically want.

Considering steam has more than double epic's concurrent users, I don't think it's a big priority at valve...
Mad Scientist 2022 年 11 月 15 日 下午 6:18
Epic can't sustain that strategy on the long term. Valve doesn't need to bribe users with free games.

Developers/Publishers offer games for free when they feel like it. I've gotten a fair amount of freebies on steam that are fairly good, usually when a newer version of a game is coming out.

They don't need to bribe users to compete, they have the users, they have a lot of paying users which is the goal. Freebies usually don't drive income - they only have numbers of users redeeming said freebies.

Business is to make a profit, not burn holes in your pocket and drill deep into the ground hoping more people will come and buy something.

Considering epic has sustained over a billion dollars in losses so far, and steam generates billions in profit, I think steam is doing ok not copying the store that is losing money left and right...

I mean Epic makes enough money to basically do that forever. Hell from the Epic lawsuit their conversion rate cost for free games per new user was ASTOUNDINGLY LOW. They probably spend more a week on ads on Facebook than they did the entire budget for free games in 2019

Yet the store is still heavily in the red and has no sign of even breaking even.

Yet if you do some research, youd know that it was predicted and that they are going for long term benefits instead of short term gains.

Why would Valve want to emulate the practices of the store that isn't even profitable?
I mean seriously? BNever mind that devs already do that fairly frequently if you keep your eyes peeled.

Those games are not "free" to Epic, they pay devs to put them free on the EGS.

It will not last forever. EA use to give games away. They don't anymore...same with Epc.

That was just given away for free on Steam

Steam really wouldn't need to, since they're already the top in the game market. What Steam needs, is to not losing out on the exclusive game releases. Recent years, Steam have been failing on that.

I seriously doubt it goes on forever, They have money, but it isn't limitless.

You can't just keep not making a profit, forever.

So the plan is to attract people who are only in the service to get free games? How does that drive sales?

These are people that know that they are getting a fee game every weeks so why would they purchase anything at all?

These ideas are usually accompanied with some weak arguments based around exposure and competition, but again the customers being attracted to this are just a lodestone on Valve's neck by using their infrastructure while offering nothing back, and competition in this case is akin to Valve nicking an artery.

The idea could at least pretend to be feasible, such as offering a 50% discount to users who meet ALL of the following criteria:

-The user makes at least 8 pre-purchases on steam.
-The puchases are all individually priced at or above $49.99.
-The purchases are kept until the refund option has expired.
-All purchases are made om the same account.
-The discount and purchase tied to the discount are not giftable or tradeable.

This is still silly, but at least it shows some good faith by ensuring that money flows into the system, rather than just shamelessly mooching from Valve.

Don't kid yourself. Epic paid $115 million just to get Borderlands 3 first.

This, eventually your investors are going to want a return on their investment and the lenders are going to want to get paid back...

You've got to ask yourself why the neighbors across the street are giving away free games, then ask from Valve's perspective if there's any reason to do the same thing.

1 - Epic is giving away free games as an incentive to sign up for an Epic account. They're trying to grow their userbase, and it would he extremely difficult to try and just compete directly.

2- Valve has no reason to do the same. They already have a massive userbase that's actively growing without having to offer freebies.

I don't think people asking for freebies on Steam because that's what Epic is doing indicates greed. I think it's just highlighting the value of having games on Steam. It's clear that Steam is not just another launcher, and it does matter to people where their games are. Epic gives games away, and a lot of people are enjoying that, but at the end of the day a lot of them wish those games were on Steam instead. There's value there.

Still doesn't change the fact that Valve has zero reason to offer freebies though.
