Disable Overlay for selected Non-Steam game Option
Steam have an option to disable Overlay for selected game, so the other games can still use it, and an option to disable overlay for all games. But there is no such option for non-steam games that was added to Steam library. It's irrational i think. If player don't want to use overlay - he will use the global option of disabling overlay. Steam games that do not support Overlay have a Steam-side Overlay block. Non-Steam games have troubles with overlay too. And the only option to cure it - Global Overlay Disabling each time you want to run that game.

So.... I suggest on adding "Disable In-Game Overlay" option in Non-Steam games properties. So that player can choose which of non-steam games will run with overlay, and which not(to avoid crushes and bad performance)

Can't you just not run them through Steam?
For me like for many Steam users Steam Library is for all games and even programs. To keep clean Desktop and Start Menu. It's better to hold one App pinned to the bar with all needed shortcuts and category system than dozen folders with standart shortcuts on desktop, start menu and quickstart bar. It's a matter of use.
Then make a folder containing all the shortcuts for your non-Steam games. Basically the next best thing.
If I wanted to avoid this little problem I would go to Razer Game Booster or AMD Raptr in which I even haven't noticed Overlay related crushes in games, and which autoadd every single installed game to their library. The point of this tread is not to avoid Steam, but to make it better. Adding Disable Overlay option to Non-Steam programs will extend steams library potential and make the life of BigPicture users more comfortable
I'd like to chime in and add a request for this feature.

Steam is currently pushing it's big picture mode, and the idea is that the user never has to leave it to launch as many games or applications as possible, allowing them to do everything they need to with their gamepad. When I'm running big picture, I don't want to have to leave the interface, look for my mouse and keyboard, find a folder somewhere and launch an old or lower resolution game.

A lot of responses to this request are a condescending: just don't use steam. But a lot of people really enjoy what steam is doing to simplify couch gaming on pc and would like as many OPTIONS and functions as possible.

Anyway, the steam overlay should be a per-game setting, even for non-steam shortcuts. Not just a global toggle or a steam-game only option.

If not a full on option, how about a launch perameter?
