No, horrible idea, there is a reason that it's not possible, spammers, phishers and scammers would love a feature like that.
there s always an option called 'block all communications'

When a lotta people know that it's a very flawed idea and don't want it to be there in the first place, why would they ever agree to this feature so they'd have to block spammers and bots left and right?

ok, some people.... [who don't want to be contacted] ok with dat... yu know - but it dosent mean its all the people.

You think that 100 scammers/bots only contact those who want the crab in their inbox.

The request is an option to blindpost people you do not have on your friendslist, and I do not want to waste hours on maintaining my inbox, just because some people feel they need this feature, it was that way once, and Valve stopped it, I prefere that it stays that way.

So how about this?

Add an option (off by default) to allow receiving messages from any non-friend account with over $5.
Max 3 non-friend messages can be sent per user per day (to make it not worth spammers' time).
Messages can be flagged for moderation.
Users can also set a limit of how many non-friend messages they can receive per day - and people that try to send to someone who's limit has been reached are simply told "inbox is full".

Users have a field where they can describe types of chat they don't want, eg:
"Please don't send trade requests or turnip recipes".
Ignoring this field is also moderateable.

The only problem remaining IMHO is that someone at Steam would need to code it - and being boring work it probably won't happen.

good idea, BUT - still why - why free communication in ''' COMMUNITY''' cant be free of charge ?
i'd like to compare with situation - i m walking in the streets, want to ask smthng to sombemody, but i cant do it, i ll have to pay 4 it, or I have to get him/her on my friendlist.

To give a full comparaison, in your example, dozens upon dozens of people, all different, try to lure you into dark alleys to rob you using various methods, every single day you get out.

Even if you assume they will not try again if you say "No thanks", it got grating fast and soon, you wish that they would stop all at once.

That was the situation before the 5$ requirement. It's a less-than-subpar solution, but it was fast and it worked.

Honestly, that's the only way such a suggestion could work out.

because this is a SERVICE here, where you arent entitled to anything here.

Granted this isnt the reason why the paywall was implemented but still.
