Ability to follow a developer on Steam.
by that, I mean if they release a new update for a game(though that is in-part addressed with the "updated games" section on Steam) or when they release a new game.

There isn't yet and it's discussed already many times in the forum.

I would like to have that option as well to follow new released updates / DLC from trusted developers and / publishers.

For the moment you can subscribe to their groups.
Most developers have one and announce new released products / updates and DLC.

I'll try giving the subscribing to groups a shot, "Most developers" might not mean the same thing to you than it does to me. I play alot of obscure games and not AAA games.

Well that's why I fully agree with your suggestions, it was more a workaround for the time Steam / Valve do not pick your great suggestion up.

That's a great idea, it would help out both fans of a developer and the developers themselves.

Following groups is a good idea provided they don't spam much, but for the first 4 developers I tried, either there is no group, or the group does not announce new games:

10tons
bacon bandit
d3t
fallen tree games

I made a set of bookmarks in my browser for the devs I want to follow, and I guess every year or so I'll check them all.

For example: http://store.steampowered.com/search/?developer=Grey%20Alien%20Games

If you want to follow a developer, visit the Developer's home page, facebook or twitter feed. YDevs aren't going to be happy about having to cut and paste every thing to two different sources. Bonus is that you can also get non-steam related tidbits from the dev that way.

don't use Facebook, don't have Twitter. If a developer is gonna take issue with having to "cut and paste everything to two different sources", then they're gonna probably take issue with having to make screenshots to upload to Steam, having to edit together trailers and such to upload to Steam(and post to YouTube), etc. If you want to be seen, then you need to use tools to allow yourself to be seen. Its basic marketing. What I'm suggesting is a tool to make it easier for people to see you. Not all developers will HAVE to use such a tool, just like developers don't HAVE to use Twitter or Facebook. Besides, when I DID have a Twitter, games by developers I respect flew under the radar(they either just got lost in the feed, or they got throttled by Twitter's algorithms) until I found out about it a year or two later.
