We've been asking since the beta went live on August 24th for an option to toggle codes or scanner but they are adamant to have the scanner the default.
Sorry - I initially meant QR codes - But include bar codes in my meaning as well.
I DO NOT want anything that anyone walking behind me can scan and get access to my account.
I want to have the ability to turn this OFF on my login screen.
Don't need it DON'T want it!!
Your QR code doesn't work for another person using another phone with a different number than the one attached to your Steam account.
It is the same thing with your codes. Those are unique to your account.
Maybe this is true - BUT - the QR code is something that shows information about my account that is not visible to me. I should have the option to not display it - since I don't know what's there.
The QR code is the normal guard code in QR form. It doesn't show information about your account.
Have you looked at the login screen lately?
I'm assuming not. Why not logout and try it - and see the big QR code...
But I have no way of knowing that - AND - it must have something if it lets your phone log in.
Sorry not buying that it doesn't have something...
Why can't I have an option to not have it???
There is nothing related to your account stored in the code - it's a unique code that your browser gets from Steam, and by scanning it Steam knows to give access to that particular browser based on that code. Whoever scans that code will be logged into that browser.
The reason you can see the barcode while not logged in, is because it does not contain information about your account (how could it, if you are not logged in)
But why don't I have the option of turning off something that I can't see the content of -OR- know what it actually does?
I didn't ask for it, don't want it, want to disable it.
Be aware, that in the http protocol, most of what is going on you can't see the content of and most people don't know what it actually does - example, http headers, cookies, scripts, etc.
You can see the content though - it's a qr code, plainly visible - all the content that it contains is in the visible image itself
It's the same as if they display some number, and you enter that number into your phone - but this way you just use the camera.
At the bottom of the code it mentions "Use the Steam Mobile App to sign in via QR code" and at the top it says: "Sign in with QR"
One reason there may be no option to disable it, is that it is there before you are logged in - so how will it save your preference, if you are not logged in yet ?
Why would you need a 'toggle'
The QR code basically bypasses the need to type in your username and password. So you don't need to 'toggle' it
If you don't want to use QR login you just type in your usermame and password like normal. Then you will get a push notification to your phone to single tap log in
The entire point of the QR code is to not have to type in your username/password so its obviously going to be on the screen where you would be typing in that information. You can't 'toggle' thing because it would mean that you would have a setting saved, despite not being logged in, for a setting?
If you are not going to use the QR codes, then just set the 'home' page of your app to any other part of the app. When you get the push notification you'll be sent there anyway if you dislike the whole "i dont want to activate my camera" thing.
There is a bug that makes it not switch off even after leaving the scanner which makes it drain my battery extremely fast and also heats up my phone to where it is hot to the touch.
They said they were looking into that issue but nothing yet.
