Let us add nicknames to people who aren't on friends list
This way we can make a note, we will see it when they post, etc. Its helpful because sometimes people change names and you won't realize someone is a user you've run into before.

It already shows up on the forums for friends like [Name(nickname)] So would just need to add an option to assign a nickname on their profile screen.

Well for starters, the first step is to put them on your followed list. From the followed list the ability to add nicknames would then be the suggestion.

There's a follow list?

I do like this idea though. The only thing I would maybe do differently is have the nickname or note visible when you click on their name. Like when you click on that little arrow next to someone's name and you can view their profile or posts, have it show there at the top.

Dear brian9824,

That's the equivalent of students nicknaming others at school, which is a terrible idea that would only instigate toxicity. Thankfully, even Valve knows that.

There's nothing toxic about it. And even if you somehow think that, they can just limit it so only the person who gave the nickname can see it for ease of remembering users who change their names frequently.

Like adding a note to someone's profile on Discord.

it already works that way. Nicknames are only visible to you, no one else, so there is literally no way you can use it to be toxic to anyone.

I see. In that case, I don't get why he brought up toxicity.

Either he intentionally misunderstood the post or actually didn't understand it.

If you look at the history, it's probably the former considering who OP is.

You can do this if you don't mind using a third-party extension.

Can confirm.

You can currently nickname people who are on your friend list or who you've sent a friend request to, and those nicknames stay for as long as that person is on your friend list or block list. Once they're no longer on either of those lists, the nickname gets purged and you're susceptible to the whims of their username & avatar changes again, which can be quite bad if this is someone who you have determined that you should not be interacted with, even on the forums, as it doesn't even tell you if the OP of a topic that you're responding to is someone that you have blocked or not.

Anyone acting as if this would have a publicly visible effect on others doesn't even understand how the current system works.

This would not be a bad idea. I mean I can just imagine the nicknames I'd wind uop with " Clever", "Handsome' "Fantastic in bed" :P.

In all seriousness though It wouldn't be harmful to anyone and It may make it easier to remember certain people.

Sounds like a reasonable suggestion to me.

To be fair, it's actually useful for someone to be contrary (ie. to "play devil's advocate") in order to clear up any potential misunderstandings right from the start.

The problem comes when counter-arguments and / or questions that come from a place of misunderstanding or misinformation, have already been answered with accurate information, and then that information is simply disregarded in favor of continuing to argue false positions.
To clarify, counter-arguments may have good reason to continue for a while when they are not being continued on the basis of a false position that has already been debunked with verifiable & accurate information.

People have a right to their opinion, & they even have a right to be wrong as long as it doesn't turn into spam or derailment. :seewhatyoudid:
