Non-Steam game launcher compatibility
A lot of games require a launcher in order to open. So i was thinking that Steam should have a compatibility option for non-Steam games added as a shortcut with a launcher.

For instance, you add the game's launcher as a non-Steam game, then you have an option in the properties that allows you to select the actual game's exe. So when Steam detects that the launcher closes, it scans the computer for the game's exe so that it works as a non-Steam game, with overlay and all.

If the game has its own launcher, such as Origin, use that launcher. Why use one launcher to end up opening a second launcher? Just open the launcher required for the game.

Because as he said, he wants to be able to use the Steam overlay. Another reason: someone might want to make use of SteamLink with a non-steam game. Therefore he once again needs to launch through Steam.

To OP: I have read that if you add the game launcher as a non-steam game and launch the game through that, it will work and you will have Steam Overlay and controller configuration enabled. Some people claim it works for them. In my experience this is not really the case (for example Mass Effect Trilogy bought directly from ea store does not work like that). But you can give it a try yourself in case you haven't. Another alternative is the use of third party-software such as GloSC. This software's main function is not what you are after, but a happy side-effect is that you will get Steam Overlay in any non-steam game — even those with external launchers.

In any case it would be great if Valve added the ability for the user to micromanage non-steam games burdened with launchers, without the use of third party software like I mention above. It is not like it is impossible, because if you make that same purchase through Steam it is already configured to work correctly.

I wouldn't expect Valve to try and solve this problem. Non-Steam games as a feature is a limited, maybe even bare minimum feature. Complex nonsense trying to navigate how every game and their individual launchers function, where games are stored, and all that really isn't Valve's problem to solve.

To me it just creates issues where people ask to have every launcher, regardless how obscure added. And then have a fuss whenever a launcher updates and breaks compatibility.

No, probably for them it's better for you to get used to the idea that the non-Steam games feature isn't a golden hammer.
