Game hour's lost due to losing internet connection for any amount of seconds and reconnecting.
I was told by Steam support to talk in here as the Dev's read here frequently. So, I've decided to post a majority (not all) of my Steam chat with the support ticket I had made to hopefully let other's know what happens and maybe it'll get fixed at some point. I will not be posting anything from the support member. Not many people know this but if you pay attention, you'll then notice it too most likely. So I think?

ME: "I can't attach a picture because it's just a general question about your client and game hour recording but, did you guys (Steam) know that whenever Steam friends disconnects, it ends up causing your game hours that you are currently playing to not save as an additional hour amount after you close the game? The same thing happens if your internet disconnects for a second or two and reconnects right after, you lose all current game hours that you've been playing until you close the game and reopen it.
For example, let's say I'm playing Ark (although it happens with any game) for 10 hours and Steam friends disconnects for a couple seconds for whatever reason Steam friends disconnects and refreshes itself for, I could then play another 5 hours and when I turn the game off, It'll say I have my previous hours +15hrs that I had just played, and then those +15 hours will disappear and it will return to the hours before your play time. The same goes for when you disconnect from the internet, it doesn't save. It only saves if Steam friends does not disconnect or you do not disconnect from the internet during that current playtime.
This issue has been happening to me and a few other people I've talked to that didn't even notice until I told them and they then noticed it happening too. I noticed this a couple years ago but never bothered to make a ticket due to thinking that Steam would just fix it but it's never happened and I've lost hundreds of hours of play times in games which isn't a big deal to people who don't care about recording their hours but I think it's a cool feature that Steam has and wanted to inform you guys that this happens in case you didn't know. Hopefully it can get fixed for your hours to save automatically if you disconnect and restart counting when you reconnect to the internet or just record offline and update once reconnected. Something, I can't imagine it's a hard fix for an expert at this type of stuff, it just probably wasn't known about.
Let me know if there's anymore info I can provide or if I'm still not clear enough."

SUPPORT MEMBER: Say's some stuff that isn't important to note.

ME: Yeah, I'm not asking to be returned hours at all, just informing and maybe it can get fixed at some point if they can figure out the issue. It may start recording the hours again when it reconnects but then when you shut down the game, it just reverts to the hours you had before you played that session. In example, I just had ARK on for four hours, it said I was at 2616 hours but then when I closed it, it reverted back to 2612 which was the hours I had before starting the game up due to disconnecting from steam servers/friends for a couple seconds and reconnecting. I always run/launch my games through Steam too. I've waited hours before and nothing's changed, therefore it doesn't go back and put in the hours missed.
I'm basically just writing this to inform Steam in general on what does happen in case someone isn't aware that this does happen, not looking for anything, just trying to help and maybe if it wasn't supposed to work like this, it would get fixed as it is quite annoying when you've been online for a good 16 hour game streak and log off and all 16 hours, *poof* gone, and it's like you didn't play at all due to disconnecting and reconnecting for a couple seconds somewhere between those hours played.
Just trying to pass what I've noticed happening for the past few years along so maybe someone can do something, if not, it's whatever as I can't do anything to help fix it except explain, just trying to help make the Steam client have one less flaw.

SUPPORT MEMBER: Say's thank you, will pass info along and links me to here (due to "devs reading here frequently" is what I was told) as what happens to me seems to be of something they're not familiar with. (In a nutshell)

And the suggestion is....?
Zekiran Mar 15, 2019 @ 12:19am
tldr, I cannot for the life of me figure out what the suggestion is here.

Is your suggestion, "keep recording even though your steam system that is doing the work offline and unable to do this"? or ... ?

The suggestion is to fix it not recording the hours. I don't know... this is the link where the Steam support person sent me to post. Don't look at me, lol.

That's a standard response from Steam Support for issues that they don't deal with.

I think it's better to find out why you're disconnecting/reconnecting so much.

They sent you here cause they don’t want to deal with you anymore.

Fix what? The fact that either your internet went down or steam went down for maintenance? Because a lot this week Steam went down for maintenance, and went offline... So there's nothing you can do to get those hours back, they are gone for ever. Don't play games for hours on end if you care about hours. Leave the game every once in a while..
AmsterdamHeavy Mar 15, 2019 @ 6:06am
I cannot imagine being this focused on playtime hours.

You all act as if I actually want the hours back/care so much about when they are gone, I don't give a crap.. I just don't see why it's there if it's not meant to actually record correctly. I'm just bringing up a problem in which I noticed years ago, it still happens and was trying to be helpful as I'm not the only one that loses hours over steam friends randomly disconnecting for a second or two (not only on Tuesdays, whenever it disconnects). Goodness gracious, lol. I mean, heck, sorry for trying to not want something half ass. I bet you all also think the steam marketplace is top notch too and wouldn't want that upgraded/fixed either. o.O Hell, let's never fix anything on Steam ever because, why bother? Let's let it get overridden by some other platform with a team that does care within some years instead of keeping it on top. I don't know why I bother trying to be helpful when big companies and other people don't ever give a crap. No one ever wants to face an issue, they just want to avoid it or pretend it doesn't exist/doesn't need to be fixed.
& To fix it from when it does go down, to keep the hours and not just delete them upon re-connection, holy crap, I mean, it's not that hard to understand. Why write on a thread if you're just going to be annoying? You're not helpful one bit. & Yeah, I'll just leave the game in the middle of a raid, I'll just leave the game in the middle of a 4 hour tame, I'll just leave the game so other clans/tribes can get an advantage just because the client doesn't record properly. Sounds good, 10/10 comment, will ask for help from you again. Get out of here.. =.=

Well how can what get fixed? All you are doing is making a super long ass paragraph ranting the fact that you lost 4 hours in a game, and want that fixed because Steam went offline, probably due to maintenance.... What is there to fix? Honestly, this thread is a pointless rant that nobody can help fix it. Why are you asking us to help fix your issue? We can't do anything! This thread did not need to be created at all.

Not asking YOU to fix anything. I was sent here to write my concern and maybe a dev would understand why that happens and maybe fix the point of on disconnection, the hours are still saved. I don't know why you're even here. Who are you? Nobody, just a troll 17yo kid in HS, get out of here please. You aren't getting a single message back from me no matter what you say, so, peace out.

It's just nice to know how long you've played a game for, that's all. It's not something to be spot on about but it's nice that it would save. For example, I have currently over 800 days of logged in time on RuneScape over the last 16 years of playing it due to it being recorded.. It's just something nice to know, you know? Fun facts type of deal and it would be nice if it was correct.
Crazy Tiger Mar 15, 2019 @ 7:13am
Not everybody said something about the hours, so please keep the "all" to yourself.

If Steam disconnects, it can't properly synchronise, hence the change in game play hours.

You need to look into the reason why you're disconnecting/reconnecting so often. Steam doesn't have this behaviour and certainly hasn't had it for years.
You're attributing this "problem" to Steam, but it would be wiser to check your computer, router or ISP.

Yeah, I'm not trolling, nor am I troller. I understand that you're angry, but you have got to realize that a developer telling you what you want to hear won't give you anything back. I told you the reason why it went offline. It's happened to me before too, when Steam goes offline while you are in game, you will lose your hours. That happens to everyone. You're going to have to deal with it. If a dev were to come here, he'd probably say the same thing. And I said it once, and I'll say it again. Steam went down for maintenance a lot this week. So there's nothing you can do, there's nothing a developer can do.
