Allow running a dedicated server and associated Game application from the same account
When trying to host a dedicated server (in the 'Tools' menu) on computer A and run the associated game (in the 'Games' menu) on computer B from the same account, a popup appears in the server pc saying that it is waiting for the server to close. Approx. 3 seconds is the window to click 'Cancel' which allows the server to continue running.

The client should not be considering a server a 'Game' since you don't 'play' a server. Also, servers are inherently useless without their parent game, so only allowing one to run at a time from the same account is rather pointless.

That is something handled by the developers. send your suggestion to them for whatever game your talking about.

Post in the games discussion area, this is the suggestions and ideas area for the Steam client or website which has nothing to do with the game other than telling it to launch.

Agreed, it is a Steam client limitation - can't run games on multiple devices at the same time, even if the game and dedicated server are separate products on Steam.

Then ask the developers of the game to make the servers their own thing where you don't even need an account to run a server like how dedicated servers were in the past. Anyone could download the server and run it, didn't need to own the game.

Thats not a Valve issue, thats a developer/publisher issue if they want them connected.

There is a feature within Steam - in your Library, you can select "Games", "Soundtracks", "Software", "Videos", and "Tools" - The Dedicated servers fall under the Tools category (I think it is hidden by default, so maybe not many people know about it)..
This IS a Steam feature, not really a developer / publisher issue.

For op, try using Steamcmd to manage the dedicated server - it might be more difficult to use, but it should get around the issue. Alternatively you can try create a new Steam account for it.

Its a Steam feature if the developer of the game sets it up that way. Valve doesn't just make a dedicated server out of thin air. The developer has to make it and set it up that way.

Again in the past, dedicated servers were all on their own so that anyone could set them up without owning the actual game.

For what ever dumb reason, companies have been moving away from stuff like that, but its still up to the developer of the game to do all that.

What game are you talking about? Have you actually googled how to set up an independent server or at least asked in the games discussion area? Have you tried looking for the server software with an account that doesn't own the game?

I forgot about Steamcmd. I tried it a while ago but didn't get very far and forgot I had it. I'll give it a try again. The specific game in question is Satisfactory, which I know is still in development (especially MP and servers), but I suspect this situation applies to more than just this game.

I can successfully host a server, I just have this annoying race condition when it start because once I start the game, I get a Steam popup on the server PC saying its going to exit Steam and is waiting for the server to close.

I would hope to see a fix for this in the client since it's fundamentally a Steam limitation.
The server comes with the game when you buy it (as far as I know) so other than creating a second Steam account and buying the game again (or going to a different platform) I didn't really see a path forward there.

It sounds like you are trying to start a private game and not a dedicated server. Try this page, its from July 18 of this year so it seems pretty new still. My guess is that it will get better eventually, the game is early access after all.

https://screenrant.com/satisfactory-how-to-setup-run-dedicated-server-guide/

https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD
SteamCMD Step One: Download SteamCMD and extract the file

SteamCMD Step Two: Double-click on the extracted application to download the files, then type quit to exit

SteamCMD Step Three: Right-click and start a new text document file, then open it and add the command steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir SatisfactoryDedicatedServer +app_update 1690800 +quit

SteamCMD Step Four: Go to file, then save as and save the text document as server.bat and choose All Files from the file type drop-down list

SteamCMD Step Five: Open the new server.bat file and wait for the files to download

SteamCMD Step Six: Open the Satisfactory dedicated server folder, create a new text document, then paste FactoryServer.exe -log -unattended into it

SteamCMD Step Seven: Save the text document as start.bat, then open it to run the dedicated server

SteamCMD Step Eight: Launch Satisfactory and choose Server Manager from the main menu

SteamCMD Step Nine: Choose ‘Add Server’ at the bottom of the screen

SteamCMD Step Ten: Players can add their IP address and the default Port, 15777, then choose 'Confirm' to create the server
