It's become a meme at this point, my suggestion/idea is simple...

STOP ANNOUNCING IT.
At least not unsolicited, like make us opt in to share or see that.

Like hey, maybe I'm a prude who's secretly ashamed of playing House Party (I'm not) and I don't want anyone to know about my adventures in Princess and Conquest (I do, I want everyone to know) I should be able to opt out of sharing that info if I want to (I don't)

And actually, I should have to opt in to share it (I would)

And I shouldn't see the adult content games other people are playing unless I want to (I do want to)

There's two valid options available that work quite well:
A) Turn off notifications
B) Remove them as a friend

Lacking genre notification granularity wouldn't be to the detriment of valve.

Usual canned response you'll see: "Own the fact you/your friends play these types of games, or just don't play/be friends with those who do"

It would be reasonable for those notifications not to pop up for people who have switched off seeing adult content in the store at least.

If you go invisible on Steam Friends it doesn't show notifications of games you're playing.
That's how I hide my game activity.

Ok but it would be nice if Steam added more options to control the notifications that are shared with others about our accounts, and the notifications we're shown.

Start the game, add Notepad or whatever as non-Steam game and run it at the same time/slightly later. Maybe even give it a funny title.

Personally I'll share my kink with the world and go out of my way to do it but I feel like other people should be able to avoid seeing it without removing people from their friends list or child locking their account.

I mean, yeah kids too, like we shouldn't have to child lock accounts to filter out notifications about ♥♥♥♥ games, that's a little silly.

Yes but then, everyone else on every other account still sees notifications every time one of their friends plays a ♥♥♥♥ game and nothing is really solved beyond my own individual experience which, again, I'll broadcast my kink proudly for the whole world to see.

Can do one of these things.

If don't want to see someone launching said game, can simply turn notifications for that.

If don't want others to see what game you launching, can do any of these methods.

- Appear offline this way friends can't message, or see notifications of you playing said game.

- Turn on invisible this way can still message, but don't see notifications of you playing said game.

- Can edit profile to hide games by making it private, this will stop anyone from seeing you playing it, as well won't get notifications about it.

- Can set profile to private, this hides whole profile, and works same as making games private, just that no one can see profile including friends.


- Can run another app to overshadow a game you're playing, simply run your game want to play, then run something else afterwards, that about it, can even do that with non Steam games as well, using a browser, notepad, anything really.
