That is the current state, yes. Hence the suggestion.

All posts in the post history are public for everyone on the internet to view. That is not changing.

Current and future state.

The posts in the post history is not what we're talking about. The suggestion isn't to make the posts private, it's to be able to make Post History private.

How would you do one without the other?

By...letting people make Post History private. That's it. Do that, and you've done one of those things without doing the other.

And still be able to look it up with the URL.

Uh, well no. Part of it being private would, I assume, be disallowing other people from viewing that page. It's an account permissions matter, not just omitting a link.

Person with a private profile asking "why?" about privacy. Come on, I'm sure you understand the idea in general. The whole thing about privacy is that there isn't some functionalist answer to "why". Why do people wear pants to hide their genitals? Why do they have curtains to stop others seeing into their living room? I don't know, we're a weird species like that, and that's okay.

Nothing on my profile is public except for my artwork, reviews, screenshots and a video.

People hide their private parts because it is against the law to show them in public in most places.

For curtains, mainly to stop the funiture from fading because of the sunlight.

Right, and you don't owe anyone an explanation as to why you want your profile to be private. I'm glad you have the ability to set that option the way you prefer it. Similarly, I would want you to be able to keep your post history public if you preferred.

Some people, maybe. But it's not like everyone's sitting there at home thinking "I wish I could show off my genitals but I guess I'd better follow the damn law", and if the law were removed tomorrow everyone would suddenly become comfortable with seeing each other's junk.

The law isn't the only thing holding them back. Laws are expressions and results of cultural ideas and values; they don't exist in isolation, we make them, for reasons.

Privacy is a value that people have an appreciation for in a large variety of circumstances regardless of any law being in place. If you seriously don't think people actually enjoying privacy in their homes and want to explain everything as being about furniture maintenance, I mean, you're entitled to your view, I guess, but I don't agree. Fences get built above eye level for a reason.

You own that stuff you are talking about.

You don't own posts on the forums.

First of all, I'm not sure "own" is the most useful term here, but it is your content. You've licensed it to Valve for distribution, but it's still yours too.

Second: so what? It doesn't matter anyway. I don't own the number of hours played in my games. I don't own my friends list or my inventory display page either, and there are privacy settings for those - which also, notably, can't just be accessed through the /friends/ or /inventory/ URL appendices from outside their chosen level of accessibility, because people have thought of that.

The difference is that when you choose to post in a public forum you are agreeing that what you posted should be visible to the public.
