Profile badges need a rework

This is long overdue

There's 2 main problems I have with Steam badges, and I hope enough users share my annoyance in order to inspire an update. These have to do with:

1. Steam profile's row of recent badges being ungovernable
   
2. Badges' levelling making the ones before unavailable forever

I'll explain each in a little more detail below.

Row of Recent Badges Should Be Customizable

Either let us hide them, or make it customizable. I'm not trying to sound entitled writing this, mind you, it's just that this is something that has mildly bothered me for years now, and Steam has shown that they care for profile customization and for the users that put effort (and money) into theirs and their aesthetics.

Mainly, with the release of the point shop and the profile's graphical overhaul, a lot has been done for us to play around with our profiles and make them look how we want, with the addition of extra showcases, frames, colours, animated backgrounds, etc. So how come we still have to put up with a completely wild and random row of badges?

I know you can do the trick of crafting the badges in the order you want, but even then their stay is temporary, as you'd eventually want to craft more badges to further level up your profile. EVEN if not, the moment you acquire a new game, the game collector badge will jump on front, and the day your account turns another year older, it'll be the years of service badge.

Please, Valve, make it customizable OR, at the very least, give us the option to hide them.

The Badges That We Lost Forever

I really hope I'm not the only one mourning for the badges that we lose every time we level them up. For real! there are tons of games whose badges are all really cool looking, from level 1 to 5, and not being able to keep all of them for showcasing is a real shame imo.

The moment we climb a single level for a badge's progression, the one before is gone for good, and I feel like profile showcases could look really cool if we were allowed to pick all of the different levels we've acquired; perhaps still restricting it to 1 badge per game, but at the very least letting us pick which of the 5.

It's great being able to display more badges with the profile showcase upgrades, however that doesn't negate the fact that you cannot choose any level of that particular badge you want to show.

As, more often than not, a real currency is involved in making Trading Card purchases on the market to level up the badges, surely we have the right to every version of it if we've quite literally bought it?

Another annoyance for me is how rare and unique the foil badges are (and costly), yet if you don't show them on a showcase, nobody knows they exist, as the Library only shows the standard badge on the game profile, when it should show both.

I want to note that, for the longest time, we were unable to crop our profile pictures. I'm not sure when, but at some point back in 2021 (maybe even 2020) the feature was added as I later found out when I changed my profile pic and was able to finally crop and adjust it. Not all hope is lost...just have to wait for a long long while....

Context for those who weren't around Steam for ages, pre-2020, when you upload your PFP, you couldn't crop it. It had to meet certain size requirements, it gave you previews, but that was it. They auto-centered the picture and adjusted the size, but you could never actually crop it. You had to use third party sites/apps or edit yourself in order to crop your PFP. The ability to crop your PFP was added I estimate somewhere in mid-2020 because as I recall, it was not a thing 2019. Maybe someone will remember when it was first introduced, until then, I'm guessing mid-2020.

That's true. They should let us hide recent badges, as well as let us keep former level badges. Not sure if they will take your advice into consideration...

Despite Valve ignoring this suggestion for well over 2 years, anything is possible.

That actually does beg the question... what are things like badges and stickers actually for? Does anyone still use Steam chat now that Discord exists? If not, what's the use of emotes? Profile and avatar customization makes plenty of sense, definitely, but a lot of these other add-on's just leave me scratching my head.

Yes, but why? Allowing users to actively select which honours they display, and in what order, is just another avenue for user customization and what's the matter with that? If people want to show off only the biggest, most impressive badges on their profiles to showcase their e-peen then they'd be welcome to. Letting others display different ones wouldn't affect others in any way. That is what I, and I think many others here, are asking for, not removing features from anyone, just being granted further options that wouldn't eclipse the current, traditional mechanic.

Read the suggestion again, rather than point one thing out of the whole topic. We aren't asking for a lot, just an option to change them in a way we want to, OR best case scenario hide them. You point out one thing out of the whole topic and instantly flaming about it isn't helping.
