"Can you run it" type of addon
So users could check, if their pc's are capable of running the game.

this has been suggested by several others, unlikely to happen. there is no way for steam to know if a game will run on your machine or not. the game developers select what the minimum and recommended specs are, and they dont have access to every possible combination of computers.
Liability is one reason why this isn't happening.

Microsoft tried it on their own store, now guess why they removed it.
I think it'd be better for games to do this sort of benchmarking on a game by game basis, since different games use resources differently, and the resources also differ from computer to computer.

I know that La-Mulana came with a "La-Mulana checker" which you could run and it'd tell you whether the game's likely to run properly. It's a very lightweight game relative to modern computers, so the tool isn't really necessary (I'm not sure it was even back when it was released), but it does show the possibility of having devs include a little checker tool.

And this one in particular basically gave you a result like "just fine", "it might be okay", or "might be a problem!" -- even it didn't guarantee a result, technically speaking.

I mean it could work, just make an app that takes your system specs and when you launch the game it records the framerate.

If you multiply it by every steam user and every game they started you could have a nice catalog that would allow to predict if game will run on specific setups or what expected framerate could be.

There are thousands of configurations easily of Hardware & Software of which can drastically affect performance.

It's not going to happen, people need to read the Min & Rec specs.

There's also the facty that recording the frame rate..can in of itself impact the framerate on some systems.

And that two systems with identical hardware will run differently depending on who operates the system and what crap they have running in the background.

How about just using the "Can you run it" site, no need to add anything to the client.
