So true.
Total War games have an acceptable system. Their launcher is basic but workable.
I have installed hundreds of mods, have to review them at some point, even made a few myself.
Usually when in Steam browser and have downloads it is one of those mods updating in the background.
Installing/reverifying time stamp even with a mod during game play is just asking for trouble.
For every game I have, I have background downloads disabled.
If I want to use a major mod for play I check if it is up to date before launching game.
You can force an update by unsubscribing and resubscribing.
