The owner can already file for their work to be taken down if someone is using them without the proper rights. If you add custom backgrounds the amount of people who would use a copyrighted image would be something in the millions.
As for the profile images, a user could take a snippet from a copyrighted video for example. Or use a number of copyrighted images to make the gif.
Even if we disregard everything about copyrights, we're still left with other rule breaking content. Nudity, porn, violence, gore and other abusive imagery would be used. With gifs you could make it so that the rule breaking content appears at the end so that it's harder to notice by someone just scrolling past. This would then mean that moderators/support need to always look through the whole reported gif.
All in all, allowing users to post custom content creates more need for moderation.
As for yser custom backgrounds, probably never.
Yeah, I can see how it can lead to issues with content moderation, though considering how often you can already find what constitutes as rule breaking everywhere it's hard to feel like gifs will make things any worse off than things already are lol.
Regardless, the new animated profile pictures really appeals to me, I just want some better ones
It's not like support has much to do anyway, they could use the extra work - if they don't want to do content moderation then they should just disable name/avatars altogether.
Aren't, like, almost everyone here already using copyrighted material in their avatar picture? :P
