Add a "turn off filtering entirely" option
It's a pain in the rear trying to find and add every word in the dictionary to the "do not filter these words" list, wouldn't it be easier to have a toggle that just turns off filtering completely?

And the only things filtered are blacklisted links and hard coded filtered words like, free and skins. Put the 2 words together and they are filtered no matter what. And websites added to the filter.

But swearing is still against the rules and mods can warn or ban you for doing so.

Cheers. It's weird that we'd get banned for swearing when it's perfectly normal in many cultures (including Australian...) and censored for the faint of heart anyway.

I never said that it should. But, since it's used by so many people, the option to turn off censorship and swear should be available. I never argued against using hearts to protect people, since my own kids use Steam. It just shouldn't be mandatory, because that is discrimination.

I think you assumed a lot there.
- I want to turn off censorship for me, 100%. If someone doesn't want censorship, they shouldn't have it.
- I do not want to turn off censorship of my words for others. If they want censorship, they should have it.

It's pretty damn simple.

Edit: and yeah, banning people for speaking naturally in their own language is a form of discrimination.

Even if you "normalize" it abuse is still abuse.

Sorry, but you cannot be taken seriously for claiming that swearing is a natural thing and is allowed.
Even in Australia, there are rules about swearing in public.
Just like America, England, and many other places throughout the world.

Swearing here is the same as swearing in public. It is not welcome or allowed.
OP isn't suggesting the rules be changed, just for Steam to provide an option to see what people have written. After all, you tell us there are many places with laws against some instances of swearing, but I think you'd find there very few with laws against hearing other people swear.

You cannot complain about people being punished for swearing when it makes zero sense to ever swear period. The entire point of swearing is for shock value. Nothing else.
Maybe in your community. But I don't know a single person who would be remotely "shocked" if I said a movie I watched was a bit ♥♥♥♥, or that it's pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up that our government is protecting sexual abusers in its ranks. Swearing is not all abuse and shock. It's fairly standard intensification too.

It's about the climate Valve wants to foster on its property open to the public. Allowing it to be disabled encourages its use which is counter to the Steam rules. Think of Steam as your local game store. You go in there dropping f bombs in front of people and they're in their right to censor you or ask you to leave..

Gus, HLCinSC explained it better than I could.

You cannot go around swearing in public areas without getting asked to leave. Period.
First of all, you clearly can; I’ve never received so much as a warning for swearing, I suspect because I don’t do it abusively.

Second, that’s not relevant anyway, because OP isn’t asking for swearing to be allowed, just to be able to see what people write.

The point here is, Steam will never have an option to remove the filter.
They might, they might not. People said this exact thing about, for instance, invisible mode, because Valve didn’t add it for years…but then they did. People said it about the block feature working on forum posts because Valve didn’t add it for years…but then they did.

Everyone’s entitled to their predictions of course, but none of us know the future. Any feature could pop up tomorrow for all we know.
