We need a lightweight bare bones platform
Generally speaking all I want to do is this.

Start steam
View games list
Play game

Occasionally I may want to browse the store, visit the forums or post a screenshot, but that really is about it. And before the update I could do all of those things with ease and in a perfectly non irritating way.

Since the update I hate having Steam even running on my system, I no longer enjoy starting it up, there is a feeling of resentment that manifests itself as soon as I see the Steam icon. This new UI is an over-designed mess. I'm no coder but it's obvious to everyone that this is a terrible piece of design, it lags, it crashes, it's increased the number of clicks required to do anything, it's ugly, it's more cluttered, less functional and it's way too resource hungry... everything about it is bad.

Please consider making an ultra lightweight minimalist UI for those of us that want it, literally a list of games and links to community hubs and the store, that's all we need. Give us a bare bones option with basic features and pure functionality that uses virtually zero system resources, if you don't make it someone else will.

Then they can talk about it here https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/. They are three threads about it.

Plus this amount to spam & necro.

It's also funny that if there is no features then people call it barebones & if they are features then it's called bloatware.

This sort of ridiculous will never stop.

Anyways i do think "Steam Lite" would be great for those who prefer just to play. So a client with all features removed would be nice.

So, back to topic then:
Who do I need to talk to, if I would prefer the lightweigth version of a launcher?

- The way it is currently is awful, as my library screen loads clustered and slow because of the changes made. I need to wipe my mouse over the screen to have stuff appear. This clearly not working as intended, is it?

- Looking at my task manager, I see Steam currently using about 400MB of RAM. Remember, this ought to be a game launcher. Is that normal?

- Those pictures irritate me and distract me, yet I cannot shut them off completely.

Basically spoken:
- I need a platform, where my games are listed alphabetically in form of a list. If you could sort be genre or make custom lists - fine.
- I would like to get developers' news on patches, updates and upcoming DLC
- I would like to see my achievements (if I would care for them)
- I would like to access workshop items easy
- I would like to start my games with one single click (so no 2nd layer of launcher beneath as Creative, Paradox and Ubisoft do currently)
- I need a link to the shop and discussion forum
- Platform should provide a good DRM for us

- I do not care about VR, chat function or whatever thing close to social media. I fact, I loathe those. Modern eye-candy design is also irrelevant to me. I value my system resources.

Now - let us be real: all this can be achieved with a lot less eye-candy, avantgardist design or hip stuff. Jut keep it simple, efficient and easy to use. The current design is anathema to this.

So again: how to contact anybody @Steam to tell them just this so that they may listen and consider? Is this forwarded to them by mods? Do they read this? Have they people being paid for reading and reporting this or are they in their own bubble and us customers outside?

Hope, this brings this thread back to topic.

Rest assured Valve reads the forums and all feedback. If there is something "important" we usually pass it on, but in this case I've all the confidence that they will see the bigger, persisting threads. To give an example though, I've passed on the issues/regression with family sharing as it's less widespread and thus easily missed - among a lot more things of course.

As for the RAM issues, apparently this is Windows reserving some RAM to make things faster - not neccesarily the Steam client (which would explain the varying amounts of RAM used). If you suspect it's too much I recommend this thread and possible fixes therein, or posting the required information. Both are interesting reads.

Me personally I wouldn't mind a light UI either, I just use it to launch games and friends/voicechat. And while I do use VR, it's used by about ~1% of the users so I can understand something seperate. Although, does the little button really bother you?

PS Thanks for your effort to bring this back ontopic :)

I couldn't agree more with OP. This new steam library is _horrible_, straight up garbage. Why the hell did they have to make this stupid change?! For 10 years everything was fine. I could select a game from the list, press play, and play the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. Now I see a whole bunch of pictures that eat away my RAM, and when I select a game, Steam shows me EVEN MORE USELESS PICTURES (SOME ARE EVEN ANIMATED). What. The. ♥♥♥♥. Just give me back my simple list of games. I don't want to have to look at this pile of stinking crap.
I can live with the VR button - it is a service offered. I am mostly annoyed by the unremovable what's new bar and the pictures and thumbnails loading. I can bear and prefer a slim list in plain text. I am able to find my stuff there faster, if not distracted by the design - and this is what has been done here: Efficiency was sacrifieced for looks - this is not tolerable.
We need toggle bloatware options.

For me the new library ui would be switched off

This is perhaps the worst addition of all, it's like they analysed some data, found that too many players were spending time in the library and so they decided to drag the store in there and force them to look at it.

Let's not pretend that the fundamental driving force behind these changes was profit, which is of course what drives every business, but the reaction I and others I spoke to have to this is one of anger, leave our library alone, do not turn it into another shop window, leave it as a place where we manage our game collection and from where can choose to jump to other places, including the store when we want to.

The lag, the crashing, the RAM burning, these are all symptoms of the initial mistake to turn the library into an advertising hoarding.
personally from the stance of having autism I find the screen uncomfortably hectic whereas before the names of the games were just there and nothing else unless I wanted to see it (clicking the community tab to see community stuff for instance).
but now with the larger font (why couldn't they have allowed to to be adjusted smaller again?) and the silly icons that honestly make it harder to read the text for me.
the system before was simple and even where it wasn't it was easy enough to look up how to do one of the more complex functions, but now the whole screen for the library is unnecessarily hectic and I hate it, If I didn't have soo many games i'd have switched to just using desktop icons to launch by now.

The below video should help to revert your UI back to the old method for now. It's a workaround, much like the one that fixed the Friend's List after Valve broke it, but it should do the job.

i need something like this to rollback my GERMAN language steam client, still being in german language after replacing these files.

Now that would be the perfect UI for me. Again there should be a choice or choices of UI.

I just want to see my games and maybe a little info like time played, achievements and DLC owned, and that's it. A clear neat lightweight UI.

edit: Ups,sehe gerase er hat das video geändert.nunja, ich würds einfach mal versuchen egal mit welcher Version. Falls es nicht klappt lässt du Steam einfach wieder drüber updaten. Kann also nicht viel schiefgehen. .

Did Valve test the client update during the beta? because all those problems are hard to miss. They released the update way too early.

It was tested for 1,5 month but no issues where found. Not sure if it was a last minute change or if it was simply missed, but yeah.

I'm sure it was tested but most people don't opt in to betas and probably didn't even know this was a thing until, like me, they get this update.

Also a lot of people that have been opted in to beta probably just opted out when they didn't like what they encountered with it.

Maybe they could give the rest of us an option to opt out of this Alpha?
