Please add a shortcut to show/hide FPS counter in game
A lot of game doesn't have FPS counter so the steam feature is very usefull but having to restart the game to show/hide it is very painful.
Thank you.

If a shortcut isn't possible, a button to toggle it from steam overlay would also work as long as I don't have to restart the game.

Most video card manufacturers have a form of software that lets you do exactly this, with hotkeys to enable and disable such readouts in games.

I don't really want to have more a tons of proprietary overlays
steam is already enough

Go to Settings > In-Game > and check "SHOW FPS COUNTER"
Presuming the steam overlay function as desired and will work with the game(s), it will work.

If not, just use the GPU software. One little sub-process isn't going to hurt, you already have GPU drivers anyway.

That can't be right. I toggled it on just recently when playing Battlefield 2042. You can find settings along the bottom of the overlay when you are in a game so toggling the fps counter on or off should be perfectly hot-swappable in there. And you can leave the settings window open as you tab back into the game. That would make it faster to toggle it whenever you need to again since the overlay remembers.

No you don't.
-Open a game
-Open the overlay
- click settings, in-game, fps counter.

You could leave the settings window open for easy switch on/off like @Mailer suggested.
