Add Server to Favorites via Domain Name rather than IP
This suggestion has come up before (in the context of DynDNS) but got gunned down by a mod, so lets make a new case for it.

Current situation: Someone spins up a game server instance with a DNS entry pointing to that servers current IP, if I save the address as a favorite, the domain name is resolved and the IP is added instead in the favorites list.

The scenario: The IP changes, the DNS entry gets updated to point to the new destination.

The problem: The server entry in my favorites list is now invalid.
In order to update the entry, I have to delete it and add a new one.
This is entirely unnecessary.

A possible solution: If a server is added via name, rather than IP, ask the user (or make it a checkbox) which format they wish to save.

As a side note: There really isn't any good reason not to support it, especially considering that DNS resolution is already implemented for the purpose of adding a new favorite.
As for any game server admin concerned about someone poisoning DNS caches: Simply don't use DNS or only give your users the IP. No problem there.
It does not matter why the IP changed. This happens and it is a bloody nuissance, especially when someone hosts their server using something like DynHost.

Why the heck was this moved to the counter strike forum?!
This ain't related at all.

Edit: As clearification if that helps, this is about the Steam Client's server list. Not any specific game's favorites list.
This belongs back into the Suggestions forum for the Steam Client.
If a mod would be so nice as to move it back .... *sigh*

I noticed a mod moved it as well. Sorry to see that happen.

As a server admin (mostly for small servers), that's effectively a nuisance. It's the whole purpose of DNS to hide the technical stuff for the user with a level of indirection and saving only the current IP breaks the control of the admin over that indirection. It has no security advantage, worst it is actually a flaw, I mostly use cloud services like AWS to host servers and it's pretty common for a server to change IP address. If I must change the IP for any reason, that IP can end up in anyone hands. It's not the case with my domain, that I have full control of and an attack on DNS is very unlikely.

All in all, I support this change which should really have been implemented that way in the first place.
While this probably should be possible, there is a Steam feature which addresses the case of the IP address changing: Game Server Login Tokens, or GSLTs.

These basically give each server a unique identity to the Steam backend, if the server's IP changes it will get migrated in the favourites list automatically because it's identified by the GSLT.
This would be a godsend for people that host servers from home.

Residential users usually do not have the ability to get a static IP due to ISP's forcing them to get business accounts at triple the cost

The ability to not have to have all the players to not have to change 15 favorites(ark server cluster) every time the ISP changes the IP would make me and my player base extremally happy
