I've been suggesting a method -- already currently implemented in GOG Galaxy -- which allows the user to edit both the display name and the sorting name of a game on their local machine's client.
This way, you can get the names to display in sensible manners (such as removing all-caps or ™ or ® symbols), because you can set it to display however you want, and then separately, you can can also have an internally-defined sorting name that puts things in the correct order.
Here's an example of how it would work:
* "FINAL FANTASY VIII" - display as "Final Fantasy VIII", sort as "Final Fantasy 08"
* "FINAL FANTASY IX" - display as "Final Fantasy IX", sort as "Final Fantasy 09"
* "FINAL FANTASY® XIII" - display as "Final Fantasy XIII", sort as "Final Fantasy 13 part 1"
* "LIGHTNING RETURNS™: FINAL FANTASY® XIII" - display as "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII", sort as "Final Fantasy 13 part 3"
* "FINAL FANTASY XIV Online" - display as "Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn", sort as "Final Fantasy 14"
Steam already has different sorting and display order (e.g. it ignores initial articles), for what it's worth. But neither of those is currently user-editable (at least in any convenient way).
Yes, and these topics always get buried for far less practical stuff.
seems to work good. And since it's just for sorting purposes, it does not hurt to shave off some stuff from the characters.
So many times people have asked for this simple feaure
