Install games before buying them
So, for example. I will buy Fallout 4 Game Of The Year edition, and its quite big.

I'm currently waiting for a payment to be able to pay and would like to play it instantly when I buy it.

It would be very cool to be able to install games without buying, but launch them only when we buy them.

All other issues aside, there's going to be enough people downloading their entire wishlists, and a few idiots with more money than sense downloading the entire store that the bandwidth fees for Valve don't weigh up for the convenience and a few added impulse buys (because I have the game installed already anyway!).

Can't they put a limit on it? I mean, its Valve. They can figure something out right?

For example a weekly max download count.

Why would Valve want to pay for the bandwidth to allow users to download games they haven't paid for?

You can always just buy the game on sale. Let it download overnight.

Lets say your mom said that she will get you a GTA V on your birthday. Wouldn't it be cool to be able to download the game before your birthday, and then just run it when your mom finally gets it?

That's what I mean. I know this is a weird example, but I really think you get what I'm trying to say.

No, that is literal piracy. You are taking possession of a product without paying for it. That is literally called theft.

Unlike your mom, she can apparently use a credit card. Your entire suggestion is defeated by the mere existence of a credit card.

A peak of 11.2 Tbps (Terabits per second) of worldwide bandwith used in the last 48 hours. And that's just people downloading their bought games. All that bandwith has a cost.

Now imagine if hundreds of million accounts could start downloading GBs of data from games they totally 'pinky promise to buy later'...

Patience is a virtue. I grew up having to wait my games to load from tape before playing. Every single game.

And it shouldn't take you more than a minute to imagine how people would game that.

Or a wallet card, a paypal account, etc.
And then what happens if she decides not to and bam...Valve has literally just wasted time, energy, and bandwidth.

The syuggestion is no different than asking Amazon to deliver you the product, that you *might*then pay for.

Just saying "figure out" doesn't magically make your idea good.

sure, something like 1 game per month would severely limit any abuse.
Still there's no need for them to do so. It's still a lot of wasted bandwith with no guarantee of a purchase.
No reason to hand the files until you buy the game just like there's no reason for a store to give you the game discs before you pay for them.

And putting a limit is only going to move the goalposts. "I was downloading this game I was totally going to buy but now I want to buy this one instead and I've wasted my download... Can we have 2 at a month?"
Just like people complain every week the refund limits are not enough because reasons.

A purchase is a purchase is a purchase. Valve likely won't waste bandwidth on those who have not purchased the game, but if you are willing to pay for the game then they are fine with that.
Meatloaf Cocktail 2021 年 7 月 28 日 下午 5:23
I can understand why pre-loading the game before purchase could benefit those who lack either immediate funds to purchase or slow internet.

However it is completely pointless to think this will ever become a reality.

Why? Three reasons.
1. Developers won't allow their game data on a device that isn't licensed for it
2. Downloads use up Steam server bandwidth and that's not free. Part of your purchase pays for that. No purchase = no recouping bandwidth costs.
3. Get a credit card if you don't have the funds to buy a game right now OR save up OR manage your money better.

Nice idea but never gonna happen.

In the first case there is no reason to assume they will ever have the funds. In the latter case...patience.

Not really nmice since we who have actually paid for our stuff will have our downloads slowed down by a bunch of freeloaders saturating the bandwidth.

See amazon delivers a physical product. Steam delivers electronical ones.

Also, what does credit cards has to do with this? I really think that you didn't get what I mean.
Allyedge 2021 年 7 月 28 日 下午 10:31
To be honest, I really don't understand why people hates this idea so much.

It might not be the best for Steam, agree. But for us users, I really think that would be cool.

Maybe I didn't elaborate the idea properly? Because some people talks about credit cards and such, which doesn't have anything to do with this idea.

People tend to hate theft. Which is all this idea promotes.

In exchange for payment you receive the game which activates the licence to download, install and play it which applies to any store selling digital games such as PSN.

What you propose is for Valve not to collect payment for other developer games and break the agreement between the developer, publisher and Valve which is to sell the game BEFORE the end user YOU get access to it. This of course does not apply to free to play games.

What you propose is open to abuse by people who will look for a cracked exe to gain access to the game without payment.
