Adding a gametime like on "howlongtobeat.com"
Anybody knows if this feature is already discussed or if it will be implemented to the STEAMclient in future patches??.

IMO it will we neat to have additional information on the shop page and or in the library itself, about the time needed to finish:

the main story

main story + extra
all achievements / completionist

Just so one can plan/estimate how much time a game may consume.

cheers :squirtmeh:

And How do you calculate that?
One can basically fill out such fields via random number generator and still be correct.

“Well, see, for me ‘clearing Skyrim’ entails going and gathering enough ore and souls to train all of my crafting skills—what do you mean, ‘fight dragons? ....’” :homelol:

are you familiar with the page howlongtobeat?

It's a communitys driven page where one can submit your personal game time, as far as I understand it.

So it is more of an estimation, than a calculation. They futhermore divide it into categories like:

like rushed and leasure gaming and then provide median and avaerage gametime for main story or main+ extra and completionist.

I guess STEAM could easily provide this aswell. Atleast for every game that has story related achievments for example. This data propably will not be availabe when the game starts being sold in the store unless the publisher or some beta testers are willing to provide some inside data.

it sure is more difficult for "open-world" games. Still on their page they give an average main story playtime of 36h for skyrim and like 1300 for completionist. Since I never played it I got no idea if that is accurate by any means. They aswill give a "retirement" percentage of about 10% which is extremely high but interesting nevertheless, since the game has that much depth.

So basically based on the honor system.

So basically no more than the developers puting X hours of gameplay in their description..y'know like many of them do.

And again it might as well be a random number for as much as it will correlate to how long it will take you to finish it.

Here's the blind spot. It doesn't factor the ..quithalfwaythroughbecausetheywereboredtotears crowd.

It's based on the honor system and would prove to be problematic. If someone bought a game that had a score people claimed took 50 hours to beat main story and they beat it in 20 hours then they could complain saying steam misrepresented the game on teh store page.

So don't expect to see it on steam. Fortunately its easy to check on other sites if you care.

Steam already tracks hours you have played a game in the client. What they could do would be to calculate the average playing time - excluding outliers as calculated by the standard 1.5 time IQR rule - and report that.

On the store page of the game it could say something like, "the average person spends x hours on this game".

Except that would not provide any context to be meaningful. If 10,000 people played Skyrim for 20 hours and got bored that doesn't tell you how long the game is at all.

Bingo
That's a demographic the metric misses entirely.

So Steam should use unverifiable extremely user dependent data as an official advertisement metric. That would definitely go well and not cause law suits.
