Steam Input but for Keyboard and mouse
Hi! I know this is very niche, but I would love keyboard and mouse support for Steam input.

I'm one of the very small subset of gamers who is left handed with using a mouse in my left hand, and I use IJKL as my default movement keys on my right hand. A good majority of games exist that have custom key bind support thankfully, but there are the odd few that makes it weirdly unplayable because of a couple weird issues.

It would make life much easier for the few of us who has these issues in games. I had to put off playing many games over the past decade+ because of one off control issues that couldn't be solved one way or another. So being able to within steam input customize the key binds would be so useful like how we can for controllers right now. Weather it be binding that one key that can't be bound, or a whole set of keys to your preferred layout especially for the games that don't have proper key bind support.

Here's a couple examples of some games that has issues:

1: Game has full/limited custom key bind support but excludes specific keys
- Cyberpunk can fully map every control, but many keys on the right side cannot be changed because they're "hard bound" to menu items that are never exposed
- MGS5: TPP, can't bind symbols like ; ' , . /
- Borderlands 3, can't bind ; without a text box popping up (Borderlands 1/Remaster and 2 never had this issue)
- Mothergunship, same thing as Borderlands 3
- PSO2, You could rebind all of the keys, except the game only let you bind what keys it said you could. (Not sure if fixed in new genesis, I haven't played it).

2: No custom key bind support, You're stuck with what the developers give you.
- Among us, all of it's keys are hard bound, cannot be changed and you have to go searching around to find the keys as they're not easily exposed to the player. No native controller support without steam input.
- Orcs must die, Again hard bound, unable to tweak key binds, has 360 controller support though.
- Some countless indie games that give you what the devs want because of time/budget/experience limitations

There are external solutions.
- Autohotkey works great (In fact I used it for Halo MCC at launch when you couldn't bind ; before they fixed that by Halo CE released), but in my experience AHK tends to drop input from time to time making it unplayable.
- SharpKeys modifies the registry. I dont want to fudge with that.
- Creating the keybinds on my keyboard itself. I really cant justify creating a new layer on my keyboard to rebind the keys myself if it's a game I might play once

I hope maybe this can be considered.
Thank you for listening, I hope maybe something like this can be implemented for the few who would love to use this!

Personally I wouldn't need it, but I know that lack of rebinding controls is a major refund reason for one of my friends, so more options in that is always welcome.

This would be nice./. BUt in the mean time OP you can look into AutoHotKey AHK.
Works great but it would be nice if steam offered something similar since AHK can and rightfully so, be flagged as a cheat.

Yeah. I’ve been using AHK when needed. It isn’t perfect espeiclaly since it can be flagged by anticheat. But also the big one is that AHK has a tendency to drop inputs from time to time.

If only Steam had a built in Steam Input for KBM. Just built into steam itself would be so very useful.

I can understand why they didn't LBM is pretty standard... but pc controllers. well they're not so standard. Game developpers typically have robust kbm customization, but they can overlook/assume some things.

COntrollers come in a widde gamut that devs cannot be expected to account for so steam input exists. The thing is any such thing would inherently have to be limited since there is a reason AHk gets flagged as a cheat.

I would love to have that on Steam Input.
Just discovered it's existence (after learning on new deck), and would be great to emulate any key, controller or mouse between each other.
"We need to cultivate desert, I mean, Steam Input power!" :spacefish:

There are programs for that. Some are not allowed in some games though like, rewasd isn't allowed to be used in CoD games now.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
