If anybody know best what tags should apply to their game it's devs, I get what you're saying, but you have games with tags that make no sense, or is part of a miniscule part of the game. It's like taking a song and putting it into almost all genres, tagging it as classical because it has an instrument in it, as pop because it has a beat, hip hop because of base line, rock because of a guitar, it makes no sense, it's just silly.
Do you really need a game that can be summed up with 3-5 tags with 10+? Not really.
Here is a simple question. Ask 10 people what type of game Legend of Zelda A link to the past is.
Some will say its an RPG, others will say its action game, others will say its action-adventure, etc
I mean here is a thread arguing it - https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/588436-the-legend-of-zelda-a-link-to-the-past/48944269#:~:text=It%20is%20in%20a%20subset,is%20done%20in%20real-time.
It's a good example of how people view games and their definition of genre's to be different. Personally I consider it to be an RPG as do many other people, but its actually defined by the developer as Action-Adventure.
Yes, because using Legend of Zelda for instance as an example if its listed with tags for
Action
Action Adventure
Fantasy
and then you stop, when I search for RPG's I'm not going to find it in my list even though myself and many others would consider it a RPG.
Generally, searching the Steam store is like searching on Netflix. It is better to go in knowing what you are looking than to hope you will stumble across something you might like. Instead, read articles written by review sites, ask friends etc. and don't rely on the Steam search, especially the tags. Personally, I find them to be more informational and not a good search method.
Others might have different experiences.
Tags can be useful, like searching for Zombies, or world war 2, or other themes people like. So if i'm in the mood to shop for a post apocalyptic survival game with zombies the tags developers use won't be enough, but using tags, i can filter it down to a manageable list that is more precise then what the dev's would define - https://store.steampowered.com/search/?tags=1659%2C3835%2C1662
The flip side is a few of those might not belong, in which you can easily report the tag or ignore that title.
No user has the ability to moderate tags based on their OPINION. You report them and they will be looked at by an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at steam to see if they are inappropriate.
Fair point. I have used tags on occasion but have only found a handful of games that way, but I wouldn't discount it completely - I just find it not so useful.
Also, congrats on getting your avatar back.
Oh lol-- you. cOoL -- ThAnKs FoR AnSwErInG.
If Halo was tagged with Real time strategy, -- Would it be an opinion that it's incorrect?
Well considering you have to develop strategy in a fire fight in real time then just like the term RPG it could be applied to a lot of things. So I can easily see how someone would make that claim. Especially as Halo has multiplayer where real time strategy comes into play, the only thing missing is the building of new units. It's not a tag I would use personally, but your free to report it if you disagree with it.
Again though, even if you tagged it with a ♥♥♥♥ tag, it doesn't give users the ability to decide for themselves what is and isn't "obvious" as that is entirely subjective.
Lol you're trolling, homie, Halo Clearly isnt an RTS.
;)
Halo- as in the first person shooter. Halo 2, halo 3, halo 4, halo 5, halo 3 ODST. That halo. Pretty sure when people refer to Halo Wars, they say Halo Wars. Halo the Master Chief collection-- is not an RTS and if it were labeled as such--- it would be inaccurate.
Never once said it was, I said i can see how someone could claim it was based on the words Real Time Strategy, especially if they don't know how that is typically used in video games.
Again though, you don't get to decide what tags are or aren't allowed, you can report it and steam will take action.
and I qoute
The words Real, Time and Strategy-- Sure they have meaning, but Real time strategy as a genre is something totally different.
An RPG is a video game genre where the player controls the actions of a character -- Id also agree that Halo is an RPG.
"In a real-time strategy game, the participants position structures and maneuver units under their control to secure areas of the map and/or destroy their opponents' assets" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_strategy
And yeah- I dont get to decide, but Mods do- "Please note that Administrators/Moderators reserve the right to change/edit/delete/move/merge any content at any time if they feel it is inappropriate, abusive, or incorrectly categorized." https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4045-USHJ-3810
you know this-
We've kind of forgotten how tags were requested as the way developers were actually tagging their games was pretty lackluster and enough people felt the need for a system to add proper tags themselves.
